I have seen a bunch of posts on this subject, but none have put an end to the debate I am having with myself as of yet, so I decided to make a more personal one. I am currently a senior applying to colleges, so I have a little time to really refine what I want my life to be, but I cant seem to decide whether I want to major in EE or CS. I have been agonizing about the subject for about a year and a half now, starting at ME and switching over to what I have now. If it helps, I will outline a few things about myself if that below. I greatly appreciate anyone who takes the time to help!
Some information about my college considerations:
I am currently applying to Purdue(Calumet Campus), UIUC, Cornell, UC Berkeley, and Carnegie Mellon – and have a few others in mind – after extensive research into the best colleges for these types of majors, along with recommendations from friends and teachers. I am going to be putting myself through college, so even if I get accepted to something like Cornell or Carnegie, I most likely will not attend, but I am applying all the same. I have a relatively good act score (although not a good gpa :|), and I am planning to take it again October 22nd as I didn’t get a good score compared to what I do in practice. I have taken all honors or AP courses, except for classes like Spanish or History which don’t come in honors.
So here is some stuff about me personally, if you weren’t already put off by the amount of text above:
I have a passion for coding, and if I know the language and what I have to work with, I can write code to solve any problem I come across. I have a great interest in AGI, as well as normal software and other programming, and will continue with this no matter what I do. I also have a very large interest in the science of electronics, and find creation and understanding of circuit systems very easy. If I were to do something on the side of EE, I would prefer to work with smaller electronics, rather than large power systems. I am naturally curious, and love to try things to see what they do, and I especially love to learn more (although out of school, because a lot of times school is a waste of time). I am leaning slightly more toward CS, but higher math is no problem, and I find it interesting, and satisfying when done.
I have looked into Computer engineering, although I have heard it is slightly more on the side of EE, whereas I would like it slightly tipped toward CS.
I seem to have forgotten most of what I wanted to write down, so I guess if more information will help I will add it.
Sincerest thanks,
