After two days of trying to uncover what was causing, and then properly reporting an edit problem in the Manage Recommendations section of the common app, we learned it may take as long as three weeks to get a response which is too late for an early application. We reached out to the school’s admission office and received a courteous and helpful response that let us know a recommendation could be faxed to the school with the Common Apps ID number for the student. We have now been trying to login to commonapp.org, in order to get the student’s ID number, for over an hour and repeatedly get an error message saying “Login was unsuccessful. Please correct the errors.” We have not made any errors, though, and are wondering if this another problem that persists with the system, and most importantly, does anyone know what is really happening and how to get around it?

Check whether you are at the tab for Applicants, Members, or Recommenders. That seems to be the typical mistake people made.

If Billcsho’s suggestion doesn’t work, try a different browser and even a different computer.

If you don’t solve this, go ahead and send the rec without the CAID. Include plenty of identifying info about the applicant consistent with what was entered into the common app to be sure the rec gets into the right file - full name, birth date, home address, high school.
