Five players have shown symptoms and have been quarantined.
Could the Sharks just forfeit the game with the Canucks? I don’t want my guys to get mumps.
Ditto for the Wings!
Young guys and mumps… Yikes.
The NHL had this last year too. You’d think they’d require all these 20-30 year olds to get shots when they join the league, just like joining the army. There are so many players now from countries where vaccinations aren’t required (or available) for children they should just give them all when the players start. I’d be worried about meningitis too since they are living in close quarters most of the years.
It happened three years ago when ~20 players on several different teams had the mumps. Many of those players had been vaccinated.
A lot of adults don’t realize that they might need boosters for MMR as adults. They may say they are vaccinated, but could be thinking of having had all of their childhood immunizations.

I read a lot of threads in the nursing forums about nursing students who have to prove immunity to MMR because they can’t find proof of their vaccines, only to do bloodwork that shows their immunity has significantly waned.
Our former allergist would often run titers on our kids to see whether they continued to have immunities as they got older, even though they had vaccines when they were young kids. Often, my kids needed boosters because the titer levels were very low.
Now the MN Wild have two with the mumps…Parise and Pominville…and they both got booster shots in 2014.

I just had my annual physical, and given the recent measles cases around here, I asked about adult vaccines for non-healthcare workers. Doc said nope…no boosters recommended. I was kind of surprised, because when I was pregnant my doc did a blood test and found I was not immune to measles/mumps/rubella. As soon as I delivered, I got the booster. Maybe because I was young, and likely to become pregnant again? Now that I’m old, the need is not there?
@shellz, were you born before 1957? The official stance is that those born before 1957 are considered immune (presumably because almost everyone used to get measles back then?).
Maybe that was driving his response, but by virtue of the fact that you tested with insufficient immunity earlier in your life, a booster might still be indicated for you. You could always ask for a titer.
@Nrdsb4 , nope. Born well after '57. I do think I’ll ask. The idea of contracting any of these preventable diseases scares me. Especially with so many opting out of vaccines.
https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/hcp/imz/adult.html lists current vaccine recommendations.
Note that certain older measles and mumps vaccines were less effective, so revaccination is recommended in those cases. See the footnotes in the above linked web page.
