CAP and recommendation

CAPed to UT at El Paso, Pan America, and Brownsville. Which one could be better in order back to be UT-Austin? Any advice ? I prefer to UT at El Paso but not much information on the schools.

I would suggest if the student’s main goal is to get to UT Austin, then the CAP program appears to be the student’s best available option. I looked at the sites for these three schools and my personal preference was El Paso as well. I do not think any one of these would be better than the others for achieving the goal of getting to UT. It is one year, but you should try to determine the best fit for the student, so the student is happy and can study and focus on the goal of completing the required work to get to UT the following year. You have until May 1 to make a decision, so keep researching. If student has other options to weigh against the CAP option, consider those as well. The plus with CAP is that as long as you complete the required courses and 30 hours of credits at the minimum GPA, you get admitted to UT Austin. Maybe not your dream major, but in. Good luck!

@lots2do, Thanks for the tip. Another factor I consider is what if he fails to meet the minimum GPA after the 1st year. I think UT El Paso could be reasonable for him to graduate there and then advance to graduate school if he wants. By the way, he likes to be a business major but not sure if he can get into UT Austin’s business school through CAP.

@Dad2013, has student applied anywhere else? Community college and living at home the first year may be worth considering. So the student can get support needed to be successful. I would think cost has to be considered as well.

Student and family need to determine what is most important, balance those factors. Cost, true college experience, obtaining the GPA in general courses to meet criteria for acceptance to business major. I am hearing in your most recent post that UT Austin may not be the ultimate goal.

I proposed a community college as an option but he didn’t consider. Ultimate goal is to set a undergraduate path for life-long career, not just for school. He applied to Univ of North Texas but didn’t hear anything from school.
