Cap

Anyone considering doing the CAP program if they are not accepted? And do you think it is a good deal or not?

Personally, if I had gotten capped, I would have chosen to go to better school and transfer in. Going to a place like UTSA is no better than going to a community college, it would be easier to transfer into UT no doubt, but without going to a decent alt school like A&M or UTD, you might find your self being behind. Thats my opinion, but some people can handle UTSA to UT, I just would never do it.

the classes taught in community classes aren’t that different from four-year universities. in my state, if you attend a community college and earn an associate degree, then you are automatically admitted to any in-state school of your choice. most community classes have to make their classes similar to the university’s classes.

i know there is a stigma about community college, but, in all, I dont think its bad to enroll in one. My dad went from going to community college (Montgomery College) to earning a masters degree at Johns Hopkins and Georgetown.

What’s the difference between UTSA and UTD? And how do you compare UTD to TAMU? UTD are ages behind in terms of education and research.

Well, let me describe my situation. Since I took to long to make up my mind about going out of state to an art school or staying in Texas, I only applied to four schools. UT Austin, Savannah college of art and design, UNT and Texas state, with UT obviously being my first choice (but knew my chances were low) … anyway… So here is the question I guess…

Should I go to UNT or Texas State and try to transfer into UT Austin… or Do the CAPS program at one of the better UT schools like UT Arlington. ( I mean id only be there for half a year basically. And it would be worth it to know I would be guaranteed to be at UT Austin next year. Plus, I wouldn’t be trying to go from UTA to a UT business major… my major would be studio art or design.

I was reading up on transfer acceptance rates for UT and… i think 41% of transfers are accepted. So I was thinking UTA caps was the better plan… since trying to transfer from a school like Texas state would be a little more difficult. Do any of you have any suggestions?

UTD has a great electrical engineering program, so thats why I would consider it over CAP. They also have a good mutimedia design(3d animation etc etc) program, which I was also thinking about majoring in.

For the most part TAMU is better than UTD, but UTSA is not as good as UTD in most respects.

Kristin - you want fine arts right? Well the CAP program only gurantees you will be admitted to CoNS or CoLA if I remember correct. If I were you, I wouldn’t do CAP for a year at a place like UTSA or UT Arlington.

I don’t want to do CAP. My friends have told me because I have gotten into schools better than UT I should just screw UT if I don’t get in and go to one of them but - it’s hard. I’ve had my heart set on UT since elementary school. :(

If you absolutely want to go to UT, then by all means go for the CAP program. I have read that it is not very difficult to keep the GPA req. at a UT satillite school. However, for non-CAP students (and those who didn’t meet the req.), the transfer rate is fairly low (~36%).

So, you risk being stuck (for lack of a better term) and/or wasting your freshman year, since you already plan on leaving. That’s not a gamble I would be willing to take.

Thanks for the advice and info. Yeah I was in austin this week and I stoped by the admissions office and spoke to the the associate director about CAPS and transfers… and he said that I could most likely transfer into the school of fine arts.

He also mentioned how basically all of the remaining students who didn’t get into their major are being processed by a computer system that will make cut offs for liberal arts- undeclared and summer program. We should know in a week or so.

Libby - Well you see if i were in your shoes I wouldn’t do cap… but I really didn’t apply to that many great schools that are “better” than UT… and now its definitely a little late. So i think im going to give CAP a shot…

You are in exactly the same scenario I am in. Most likely, I am just going to say screw UT and go to A&M. In my major (AeroE) there is little difference between the quality of the education (if any) any way.

I just looked at the College of Liberal Arts webpage. There is nothing that I can see myself remotely being interested in majoring.

ddomino, you can always transfer to a different major at a later time.

That’s true. Once you have the required prerequisite courses and the minimum required GPA, it’s possible but not assured.

My friends say there’s something about the term Liberal Arts that bothers me.
