What do you think? D accepted into mt bfa uarts and mt at cap21… Any thoughts out there?
Thanx

For starters, your D needs to think about whether she wants to earn a college degree (which would be the BFA at UArts) or get two years of training and earn a certificate (which would be CAP21). In my view, that is a HUGE difference right there. Both are good programs. Nobody can tell your D which to pick. She should have selection criteria listed. Then, she should write down how each school meets her selection criteria. She should compare and contrast both schools in all these areas. It is about fit for her, not which is better or best.

Thanx, i agree that it is about fit…she only applied to schools that she felt were a good fit. I like your suggestion with the list, she is so not a list person, not a visual learner, which is why this field is great for her…lol…That is more me…we will be compaing and contrasting both, just thought i would tap into the great wealth of knowledge here and see if there are things we may not have thought of…

Another difference is that at UArts, she will start out living in a dorm. At CAP21, there is no college and so she’d just find a place in NYC and go to CAP21 during the day.

Does your D want two years or four years?
Does she care about taking any classes beyond singing, dancing, and acting (such as classes about theater and other liberal arts)?

My own D trained at NYU/Tisch/CAP21 and it was excellent training. It is not the same as the CAP21 Professional Certificate program but the actual training at the studio would be similar. I know UArts is good too. Your D should also put the curriculum of each school side by side.

Again, in some ways, it is comparing apples to oranges because it is not like you are comparing two BFA programs. I think a huge fundamental difference is that one is a college and one is not and that one is a college degree and one is not. Nothing wrong with doing the certificate program at CAP21, mind you, but the decision on this one point alone, in my view, is the biggest piece.

Hello - I am a current student in CAP21’s 2 Year professional Program. I myself did attend a 4 year university before attending this program, but there are a lot of students who came straight from High school or from a few semester of college. This training program is intense. Instead of being in “studio” classes 2 or 3 days a week, you are there 5 days a week really working on your craft. The faculty and staff are incredibly supportive, but still really push us and challenge us in our work. I also think that living IN New York City has huge advantages. We have access to Broadway shows!! What better way to learn about the business than by seeing what’s currently out there?

If you have any specific questions about CAP please feel free to let me know. I am happy to answer them!

As a point of clarification, UArts students in fact are in studio classes 5 days a week. Acting, dance, voice, MT repertoire, MT performance, vocal coaching, music skills, crew, day in and day out. There are only about 8 liberal arts classes outside of the department which are required over the 4 years. In comparing the 2 programs, the threshold distinctions are 4 year degree program with some liberal arts mixed in vs 2 year certificate program and smaller but dynamic theatre city with loads of opportunities vs the scope and size of NYC.
