car accident ny--help?

my son was in an accident on the taconic parkway in NY. He is ok but doesn’t think the car is drivable. Does anyone know of a reputable repair place near there? It’s a Subaru.

Oh, bethie, I’m so sorry! :frowning: So glad he’s not hurt!!

I can’t help you with your logistical problem, but are you AAA members? They probably can help.
If you call your insurance company, they can also point to someone reputable.

I think the Taconic is more than 100 miles long, so you may want to be more specific about the location

I’d like to be more specific, but that’s all he told me and he didn’t answer his cell when I called back. Fortunately we are AAA members and he was going to call them for help. He is probably about 4 hours from home so we don’t know any repair places there.

The local towing firm that the AAA contracts with will know some places to take the car. How will he get home?

You must be going crazy. I know I would be.

Bethie,
You must be frantic! We used to drive the Taconic regularly (DH lived in the northern end of the Bronx growing up, and we have a good friend up in WC) and it is a narrow, windy road where everyone goes 65 mph. I hated driving it. They are good about getting cars off the road quickly up there, as it is a major commuter route.

PM me if he hasn’t found a car shop and I can try to reach my friend this evening when she gets home from work and see if she has suggestions.

I am so sorry that you are having to go through this. I am so glad that your son is fine! AAA is a wonderful thing to belong to. I wish that I had suggestions, but unfortunately I don’t have any.

Check out the Car Talk guys. They keep a mechanics file labeled “The Ultimate Guide to Finding A Great Mechanic”, which is a database of recommendations.

bethievt,
I sent you a PM.
Please let us know when you hear from him. Also, the Taconic is notorious for some lousy cell phone service as it travels through some rural areas.

I agree … the Taconic has some very spotty service, especially as you get to the northern ends.

Text messaging sometimes will go through when the voice call won’t.

Glad he’s OK – keep us posted.

bethie, I’m glad to hear that he’s unhurt. That’s the most important thing. As far as the car goes, you should contact your insurance company ASAP. They will be able to make arrangements for the repairs at a reputable shop, and one at which they will guarantee the repairs. That isn’t something you should worry about arranging yourself. Providing them with a complete report and details about what happened, who was involved, and where the car has been towed, should be enough to get them started.

Bethie,
Hoping you have heard from S and he and the car are safely ensconced some place. Glad he is OK.

Glad too he is ok, and again, knowing where in the Taconic he is will make a difference. My dad’s case manager has a subaru (in Pelham) I can ask her who her repair guys are if your s is in the lower part of the Taconic. To lighten up things, the Taconic is a pretty road! Hope that helps!

Bethie…so sorry to hear this but also so relieved that your son is not hurt. Now it is just a major hassle, which isn’t so great but sure beats injuries. I wish I knew about this because I just drove up to Vermont today from NJ and could have gotten him and brought him back! When you can update us, I’m sure we would all like to hear that he got the car to be towed and that he has a way to get home. Big sigh of relief. So sorry for the hassle part of it, though.

So glad to hear your son is OK. Unfortunately, that feeling of relief when you know he’s fine gets quickly replaced by frustration of the hassles (and expenses) ahead. Best wishes. We’ll all be waiting to hear from you.

Thanks everyone!

Just got him home. He was at a Dairy Queen in Ghent, NY where the AAA guy dropped him off. Not a bad place to wait but 4 hours is a long time in a fast food place. He is fine, but says he was a bit stunned at first. They think the car isn’t totalled, but I guess it’s pretty bad. That we don’t care about. Just so glad he’s ok. He says he was listening to, “For Whom the Bell Tolls” on CD and must have gotten up against one of the horrible ridges that edge the outer lanes on the Taconic and spun out of control. He said it was no worse physically than a Disney ride. Fortunately no other cars were in the way and he said lots of people stopped to help him. He’s gone out to see Harry Potter. We have little traffic here, especially at midnight, so it’s probably a good time for him to get back on the metaphorical horse. Not his horse, of course, but mine. Now I can feel tired and fall apart. Thanks again. You guys are the best!

wow- glad he is OK- how scary
make sure he gets checked out anyway-
thanks goodness for cell phones-
let us know what happens

What a horrible day you’ve had! I’m so glad he is not hurt. How did he get home? Did you pick him up? I am in NY state, but I’ve never heard of Ghent. Is it in the northern part of the state, near VT?

I confess to having waited until late for me to see how your S was. So glad he is safe and sound. Sleep well.
