car and home insurance post divorce

I’m finally getting around to changing the insurance policies since the divorce (end of May). The current insurance company quoted me almost $200 more for the policies despite one driver and one car coming off the policy. My agent looked for other possibilities and said the current insurance company is the lowest and the next best is $100 more. I’m very frustrated. Is it safe to buy from a place like Progressive? Their online quote was about $300 less than the new quote from the current company.

Do you have both home insurance and car insurance with the same company? That helps.

I am not familiar with Progressive. Keep in mind that the service you get if/when you file a claim is so much more important than an extra $100 or $200/year. Pick a company based on their ratings and reviews for claims service, balanced with cost.

Last thought - if you are an AARP member - get a quote from the Hartford.

I’ve had Progressive for years, they are fine.

My sister works at Progressive. It is a very reputable insurance company.

Thank you for the responses.

The agent said that the premium went up because of loss of the multicar discount. It still doesn’t seem as though it should cost more to insure one car and driver than two cars and two drivers.

Actuaries live in a different world.

Are you a member of any professional association? We have gotten insurance in the past through our college alumni associations, National Education Association, and my husband’s professional, associations.

Worth checking.

Progressive is somehow affiliated with USAA which is an excellent company. USAA doesn’t provide insurance for motorcycles or scooters and they steered us to Progressive for that.

We’ve been happy with our Progressive policy.

I had the same experience. Removed one car and one (multi-ticketed) driver from the policy. I expected the premiums to drop, but they went up.

My agent’s explanation: Statistically, single people are a bigger gamble than married people. :frowning:

It may be worthwhile to consider an independent insurance agent. We use one and have no regrets. She makes sure to only choose companies that handle claims well and that we have no coverage gaps. She compares premium prices and makes sure our coverage never lapses. I don’t believe she has much of a fee–$50 or $100 per policy, but we like the peace of mind and good premiums.

Progressive have the most advanced analytics. Their pricing tend to be more on target. I am not surprised they are cheaper.
