Car for a Kid

“Other things” being the car maintenance after the warranty-that-includes-maintenance runs out? Or do you find that enough of a bother that you will get a new more expensive car then, like you just did?

@ucbalumnus The extended warranty you mentioned is for the life of the loan… which is exactly 7 years longer than it would take for me to pay off my cards. Believe me, I planned everything down to a T. In other news, I’ve been to Ikea and the stuff I wanted to get just so happens to perfectly fit in the back of the XC90 with the second and third-row seats laid flat.

Where my son is probably going to school having a car will be more of a problem than it’s worth. Besides the cost to park it there, it will be sitting outside in very bad weather unused for long stretches in sub-zero temps, so that when he does need it, it probably wouldn’t start anyhow. The tuition includes a bus pass and there is a terminal right on campus with shuttles going all day to the most popular spots, so he won’t have any trouble getting around the area without one.

@10s4life I agree with paying back what you spent with your credit card. I’ll always pay the full amount at the end of the month. I’d never leave some for the next month because I don’t want to have extra debts. As for a car, I’d prefer paying the whole thing in full rather than financing it. As for a house, I wouldn’t mind financing it but if I were to buy a second house I would rather pay it in full.

@cshell2 Funny you mentioned that actually regarding sub-zero temps. This one argument for having a luxury car as an advantage. My old Volvo had Volvo OnCall which monitored the vehicle’s systems while it was parked. If the battery were to go below a certain voltage, it would alert me and ask if I wanted to send Volvo Roadside Assistance to help. So I think that’s a point towards having a luxury car in college! Right?

Does anyone own a Tesla and is it true that it is unreliable?

@MrThatcher - Let’s see. Spend more on a car that will sit in the parking lot than I am on 4 years of college so it will tell me when it needs Roadside Assistance vs. no car that costs me nothing and doesn’t need roadside assistance.

@cshell2 Fair enough, but hey at least I tried! lol.

Save now, spend later.
MrThatcher, a college kid doesn’t need a fancy car. I’d say, watch for false values. That sense of entitlement backfires on many kids. Go out and do some good for someone.

Add us to famailies that didn’t buy the kids a car.

Well in some situations a kid needs a car or is better off having a car for college. The college I went to was a commuter school were lots of kids had cars they drove to campus.

I do that all the time @lookingforward when friends need a designated driver? I’m on call. When a friend is too drunk to get back to the dorms? I’ll drive out and pick them up. When a friend needs help choosing a car? I’m the first person they call. With all the good I do in the world of my friends, I’ll say my shiny new XC90 is definitely something I’m entitled to. And my parents agreed since they helped me get it in the first place.

All I can think about right now is this guy…

Somebody caused quite a stir in the office today driving their new Mclaren in!

You do not need an expensive car to be a designated driver. Lol, this is the difference between some kids’ thinking and other folks.

@cshell2 That is pretty scary. If I had a kid, I wouldn’t want to spoil them like that.

@NJWrestlingmom Wish I could have seen that. I love supercars and I’d love to buy one for myself in the future.

@cshell2 Big Yikes! If your gonna do that, at least make it look like an accident. A classic textbook rookie mistake when trying to cash someone’s life insurance out.
@NJWrestlingmom Oh I bet, albeit there’s a Mclaren 600LT for sale near me… might be tempted to take it out for a quick test drive…

Actually… it would make a really nice sunday car…

You say that @lookingforward but my friends were surely glad to see my car at midnight. And they were very glad to know the car didn’t crash over bumps and rode smoothly to aid their already shaky alcohol-induced vision.

@MrThatcher I like the McLaren 570s and the Lamborghini Huracan but I’m not going to take it for a test drive if I can’t afford it.

A kid who needs a ride would be happy to see you showup in a lesser car. This isn’t ‘who has the more expensive toys wins.’ It’s superficial. One of mine was a frequent DD and her friends cared more about getting home safely. End of argument.

MoonKnight, I did like the idea buying early meant insurance stayed lower until you became primary driver. Interesting.

@MoonKnight Good point, I wonder if I can get approved for financing on that… now that would be hilarious. My friends already can’t believe I have a new car that they just recently saw but for me to arrive in another new car. My best friend would either just croak and keel over or proceed to strangle me for lack of fiscal responsibility. Who knows, only one way to find out.
