I am was wondering what companies the smart people on this forum used to insure their cars and homes. I don’t have any problem with mine (American Family) but you never know how good a company is until you have a claim. So who do you use? Are they reasonable and do you think you should have an umbrella policy? I figure it is time to do a review on my policies. Met Life offers my husband a discount through his work- anyone have them?

Amica for home and car and umbrella. Easy to work with, which is important for our family … four drivers. I’m a bit surprised American Family doesn’t offer an umbrella policy.

We use USAA for everything – they are great, and get high marks for customer service. We’ve had a couple of auto claims over the years, and they were very helpful and professional. We have our umbrella policy with them as well. I believe they are only available to members of the Uniformed Services and their families – we tell our kids that one of their legacies from us is that they get to be USAA members for life!
Consumer reports recently rated insurance companies – I believe that both Amica and USAA fared very well.

Liberty Mutual.

Make sure when you price things that you get all possible discounts: having both home and car, college (many university grads get discounts).

Thank you for your replies. I wrote this rather quickly and may not have been clear. I’m sure American Family has an Umbrella policy; we just have never had one. I didn’t know if we should have one.

Amica.

We priced Liberty Mutual. They were twice what Amica quoted. We’ve been with them for about 15-20 years. They are a bit picky who they will take. I haven’t had a claim since the early 1980s.

We have MetLife, which, in our case, quoted us the best initial rate many years ago. What I like about them is that they kept our insurance rates steady (and some even went down). Our mortgage is also with a bank that was acquired by MetLife (no complaints about the mortgage either, we even refinanced with them). I cannot tell you if their reasonable with claims, because we have never had to file one (knocks on wood).

I have State Farm on both the house and cars and have an umbrella policy. I have had the same agent for almost 25 years so I know everyone in the office really well and the customer service is great. I highly recommend an umbrella policy. I also recommend getting as much uninsured motorist coverage as they will write.

another Amica fan here, for over 30 years. They’ve always been rated #1. I have had claims for both house and cars.

We have Nationwide who just bought us a new roof (hurricane damage noticed way after the fact). I was happy about the claim being so easy (our first with them), BUT… just got my renewal they have raised their ‘formula’ so that my premium has gone up dramatically (they said it had nothing to do with the claim). I am thinking of contacting Amica as I have heard such excellent things!

We have an umbrella. The only downside is you much keep top-level coverage on all your cars which means we’re insuring my husband’s old car at a much higher level than we should.

We’ve had Nationwide for auto + home for over 15 years, in two different states. Just switched to Geico for auto (don’t have homeowners currently, since we’re renting at the moment) because they are asking 65% LESS for the same coverage than Nationwide.

We have had auto claims in the past; the last one was about 12 years ago. Never an at-fault collision. No moving violations ever. Beats me how Nationwide can charge so much more…

allthisisnewtome - getting the umbrella policy had the opposite result for me. Getting the umbrella policy allowed me to reduce the policy limits on the car to the minimum so getting the umbrella policy resulted in savings.

Wow, that’s interesting. I actually felt like I should renew with Nationwide since they were so good about the roof, but this thread is causing me to reconsider.

When I moved (5 years ago) StateFarm was trying to get out of the homeowners biz (at least in Texas) and their rates were obscene. They must be better now if you are pleased with them. Maybe I will call them and Amica. If I get quotes I will report back.

State Farm for cars and home. They are the only insurance company we have ever had. We get discounts for having multiple policies with them, good grades discount, accident free discount, etc.

USAA for us. We had very bad experience with Met Life thru an employer sponsored short term disability plan. Would never buy anything-anything at all- from them. ever.

Interesting, cartera. We’re with State Farm for house, cars, musical instrument and umbrella. We had to raise our auto coverage to 250/500 to get the million dollar umbrella.

ellemenope - I had to talk to agent about my D taking a car to school so I asked why I was able to have an umbrella policy with the lowest limits on the cars. She said it was because my umbrella policy is grandfathered in from the 90s. They don’t offer my policy any longer and now the limits are 250/500 - so that answers that. My umbrella policy also applies to uninsured motorist coverage and that is no longer offered either. If I cancel my umbrella policy, I won’t be able to get that coverage again so I guess I’m holding on to it.

BTW - I hope no one has limits of less than 250/500. I would consider that to be the minimum. I would think that any lawsuit these days after an accident is going to ask for at least that and many ask for well over $1m. If the suit asks for more than the coverage, or if there is a likelihood that the verdict will be over limits, then the insurance company will send a letter advising you to get your own counsel in addition to what they provide. Just hiring that attorney will be very expensive.

We have Amica for home and USAA for auto. Both have been excellent with claims.

Another Amica fan here for everything. We have only filed claims on the auto insurance, and when we did they offered incredible service.

USAA here for Auto, life, house as well as banking. Completely happy for the last 25 years - several minor claims, all paid out painlessly.
