Is a car needed for the first year. Does anyone know about flex car?

No, no car is needed first year. For the rare times that you will leave campus, just hitch a ride with someone else who has a car. I doubt you will lose interest in on-campus activities during your freshman year, but when you do, you can always use the bus too.

I enjoyed having a car my freshman year, but had I not had one it wouldn’t have been a huge problem.

Still, I wouldn’t exactly recommend trying to use the bus system in LA. Aside from its scary and ghetto qualities, it is very difficult to try to get a bus to even stop for you-they think you’re joking. There is however, a campus shuttle that goes to the closest metro stop, and you can take the metro line to Pasadena or Redondo Beach, two areas with great night life, and Pasadena has nice shopping too. (The only problem with this method though is that the metro doesn’t run from 1:30 am to 4:30 am, so you either have to come home early or party all night!)

Still, like MasterG said, you will probably be so enthralled with college life your first year that there won’t even be much interest in other forms of nightlife.
