Care Package from parents in India??!! ideas please!!!

Hello,

I am looking for ideas/how to send a care package to D1 in college. Any ideas with sites you have experience with will be appreciated.
If there are any parents with ideas about Indian snacks, which can be shipped locally or such, will helpful too. :)

thanks much, a

I would suggest you google your child’s college town and “Indian market” or something like that. There may be places nearby that you’re not aware of. If you placed a phone call to them and explained that your Indian child is nearby, they might be pleased to deliver some yummies.

Thank you, VeryHappy!
Googling did not yeild any specific results - That market has not matured yet i think.
I might have to settle for the usual care packages, I think:(

In that case, google Indian market in New York City. There are many of them – especially in a part of NY called Queens. I am sure they would (for a price) send goodies to your child anywhere in the US.

For example: http://patelbrothersusa.com/newsite/faqs.asp

When we lived in China I used to send my college daughter her favorite snack foods from [Netgrocer - Online Groceries and more, delivered straight to your door!](http://www.netgrocer.com) It was so much cheaper than using gourmet food websites and I could find a bunch of things she likes. Of course it helped that she had missed all those favorite snacks when we lived in China so sending granola bars and cheezits was great!

I also used www.drugstore.com to send makeup and lotions.

You can try [http://www.patelbrothersusa.com] or [http://www.indianonlinegrocery.com]

Amazon also has some Indian products under its grocery offerings.

I suggest Amazon also. I buy stuff for our Japanese exchange student from Amazon Japen. Shipping anything overseas can cost a lot. Of course, if you do want to send something directly from you, pick lightweight products to reduce the shipping costs.

Gits does a range of dehydrated Indian foods, which keep for a long time and would be relatively cheap to ship from India if you couldn’t source them in the USA. I can’t comment on the quality though; I’m afraid I live far too close to a part of town best described as ‘Little India’ to bother with such things.

[Gits - ready meal manufacturers| ready to eat| instant mixes| ready made foods](Home - Gits Food)

You might also consider contacting the international students’ adviser at your child’s school, since sometimes there is a nearby international market that won’t necessarily show up on a Google search.

@Shanghaimom, Thank you! i will make a note of netgrocer and drugstore.com for next time.
@boomting i wanted to send a package from here. but DH has been in such a rush these past two days, he just wanted it sent!!! so went for the online option.
we used mydormfood.com
@mamom Amazon seemed a bit more expensive that the other sites I checked. this has been a rushed job, so will do a bit more research.
@Sop14’s Mom the student office had one link on their site. but much of what i found were heavy on chips, some the healthy kind. definitely more work to do here.

Thanks for writing, all

applytoschool, if you let us know where your D is in school–not necessarily the school name, but the city or general location–maybe some of us Indian food enthusiasts can help you with a local source. (I’m a chana jor garam addict, myself. )

Purchase a Prime Account and the shipping cost might drop for you. Also, the beneficiary in college could sign up for one of those freebie temporary accounts that you could use to send to the college.

Fwiw, check with the schools before ordering as some deliveries are not acceptable, or difficult. Not all schools have the same rules to accept packages. You would not want your fine foods dropped at the front door of the dorm by the typical postman.

Rather than googling, try using YELP.
