Career advice

Hello,

I graduated High School with a 1.8 GPA and barely graduated. I only got into one university and the local technical college. I went to the university determined to be something and not a failure. I was not sure what I wanted to do, I took a lot of classes that were interesting. I decided at the time to do econ and poli sci. I transferred the next year to the community college and excelled there as well. This finally culimated in to me getting into UW-Madison, which shocked me after my poor high school achievement.

However my regrets are not getting into a field I was actually interested. I regret not getting into a stem or pre med field. Out of high school I just assumed I was to stupid to even try and get into those fields. Econ/polisci is interesting but my true passion has never really been in those fields. I am a first semester junior, is there any advice one could give me?

Go talk to your advisor and see if there is a way to bend the courses not required to finish your major toward a more STEM direction. You may not be able to get straight to a STEM or medically related field right away with your bachelor’s, but it may not take too many post graduate courses to get you there.

Sounds like you’ve done a lot of grade repair and really improved your academic standing in a short time, that is commendable.

There is no required major for medical school, as long as you fulfill the pre-reqs any major is fine.
