I have been detailing some of my daughter’s job search (26 yo) in a couple of places on CC. She is at a point where she is very discouraged, job searching is not good on the self-esteem. Starting to think that maybe she needs a complete career change, a new direction. Not at all happy in her current job and maybe a new one doing the same thing will be more of the same.
Has anybody successfully worked with or had an adult child work with a career coach. Not somebody who helps you get a job (interview, resume, networking skills), but somebody to help you figure out what you want to do. I would think somebody with some real counseling background, but also career counseling skills.
If so, how did you find them. Not sure where to start looking.
@kiddie, this was different. It was through the alumni association and was for alumni out of school more than 2 years. D did not avail herself as she got a promotion at her job and decided to stay so I’m not sure how it worked. When I looked, on the alumni website they also had webinars including one on changing careers.
Does your daughter want to discuss preferences, background and possibilities with someone, have an assessment of her aptitudes and skills to see where she might fit best or both? Is there a possibility that neuro pysych testing would be relevant in identifying areas of strength or challenge that could impact her next choice or clarify why she is not liking current field? There are a lot of potential angles to tackle this from and that may help with giving recommendations that are more specific to her.
looking for this too. I assume location does not matter, but my D will be graduating soon and is re-evaluating her choice in major, what she wants to do, and so on.
My daughter was able to connect with a career counselor from her college (she graduated 4 years ago). The woman was very helpful. My daughter did land a new job (starts in a week) and is doing the same kind of work but in a different industry.
