I’m a senior in high school who has been seriously considering a career in law, particularly civil rights law. I would like to specialize in LGBT+ issues, so I think it’s important for me to be as knowledgeable about them as possible. What are some essential works of LGBT+ nonfiction to start with?
Cool research idea.
Supreme court decisions are surprisingly readable, so I’d suggest that you read the Obergefell v. Hodges decision along with SCOTUSblog for that decision. (Also Hollingsworth v. Perry, though that was actually more about standing to contest a case in the end.) Beyond LGBT+, there are many Supreme Court decisions to read regarding civil rights law.
Having grown up in the SF Bay Area in the '80s, I’d suggest: “The Mayor of Castro Street: The Life and Times of Harvey Milk.”
