Career Selection - What Help is needed in High School

What help do high school students need to choose their career early?
If I get a career roadmap with phase-wise steps, would it help a student with their search?

To become, say, a lawyer or a data scientist:

  • What skills/abilities to develop in High School,
  • Which degrees help and what colleges offer those degree programs, and
  • What else do i need to do to get specific certifications/licenses etc.

A problem is that career paths are rarely linear. Many careers don’t come from a precise major.
An example given on another thread is that of someone who wants to work in communication for a sports team. A good path would not be ‘sports communication’ (although a full scale communication major and a sports management minor might work) but rather an English major with a concentration in non fiction writing complemented with internships with the college’s d1 team.
