My niece is applying as freshman to University of Michigan. Would love to attend Ross School of Business but it’s acceptance rate for high school seniors is very low. She is interested in several majors in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts but is worried the career planning resources would be sub par compared to Ross. Her brother attends another university and was bitterly disappointed by lack of internship opportunities/career support for liberal arts majors. Can my niece have confidence in career services in LSA at Univ ofMich?
There’s isn’t a LSA exclusive Career Services.
https://careercenter.umich.edu/ and HandShake can be used by all LSA, Ross, Engineering, Education, Nursing, Kinesiology, Architecture, Art, Music, etc… students. So basically everyone.
However, Ross’s Impact and CS + COE’s Engenius are both exclusive services, so LSA can’t use them.
But LSA did come out with the LSA Internship network which fairly new and only has a few good opportunities. You’ll find mostly volunteering, camp counselor, lab assistant, and file clerk positions there. Occasionally, something actually good comes up but it’ll be extremely competitive and it doesn’t have a personal contact.
It depends in general, what you major in LSA?
1.Pay attention to the Ross event’s calendar for company info sessions:
https://www.bus.umich.edu/impact/Calendar/displayCalendar.asp?layout_mode=0&layout_view=1&query_ord=2
2.You can still join BBA clubs as a non-Ross student, many of them have email lists with their own opportunities
https://ross.campusgroups.com/club_signup?group_type=305
There are other non-BBA student orgs that offer networking too.
- Pick one or two student organization that require a significant amount leadership and typically involve a semester or year-long project. Talk about your role in the project in an interview.
- Look at HandShake and LSA Internship Network for job events/applications. The big ones are the Career Expo each semester in the Michigan Union. There is also a Startup Career fair with MPowered every January.
- Compete in competitions such as 1000 Pitches, Case competitions, etc.. and collect accolades.
I’ve seen Psych and Comm majors get good full-time offers/internships using a combination of the above from Fortune 100 companies in Manhattan and San Francisco. And some work along Ross BBAs with the same job position. Keep in mind, you’re still have to try a lot harder as a LSA student to achieve the same result as a Ross student.
thank you very much for your detailed response. very helpful
Coincidentally, last night my daughter told me that she is allowed to apply for internships that are normally dedicated to Ross students because she has a 3.9 GPA in LSA (sophomore). I don’t know the GPA cut off, but she usually knows what she is talking about so I expect this to be true.
Also Ross lists WetFeet.com and Vault.com as one of its benefits, but that’s untrue.
Anyone can create an account on those websites, they are not tied to your kerberos, so you won’t see anything different between schools.
