My D volunteered at the NPR HQ in DC in the gift shop, and he used to come in sometimes. Unfailing gracious, of course. One in a game of 2 truths and a lie at a dinner with strangers, my lie was that I had his voice on my answering machine. Got away with it, too. Just wish it were so. I’m sad that he is gone.

I wondered if he was failing when after he’d retired from the show, but was still doing answering machines, they switched to anyone on the show can do the answering machine. Wait, Wait took the option of his voice on your answering machine off a while back. I didn’t listen to Morning Edition today, but the Washington Post had a long obit, which said he had Alzheimer’s.

Yes, he retired in, IIRC, 2014, but WWDTM plays reruns (where his voice is the prize) which re still fun to listen to

For a while after he retired they offered anyone in the show or Carl. Then I noticed not too long ago (maybe a year?) they stopped mentioning him as an option. I wondered then if he was having health issues.
