Hi guys,
I’m an international student who wants to major in Econ.
I’ve been rejected by Claremont Mckenna College today and I have to choose EDII.

I’m thinking of applying to one of those schools OR Kenyon College.
I know all of these colleges are my reach but I wanna go for it.

My stats: 2160 SAT (650 CR, 780 M, 720 W),
SAT II Math 2, French, Literature
GPA 3.56 (Cumulative) 3.89 (Senior) UW for both
IB TOK, Geo, Math, Design Tech, Econ, English Literature, and French

ECs: Swimming (10-12) Captain
Orphanage (11-12) Founder and leader
School Class Leader (11)
School Vice President (12)
Green Team leader (10-12)
NHS Member (11-12)

Essay: Good (not great),
Recommendations: Very good

Which school do you think would fit me best and worth the most applying to?

If CMC was your top choice and got rejected from there, then Pomona sounds like a solid option although it’s even more selective than Claremont McKenna.

Depending on where you’re from, you may have a shot at Carleton (ie., if you’d bring diversity)…
However I’d be worried about “fit” for a student whose first choice was CMC, considering how polar opposites these two colleges are.

@MYOS1634 I live in Africa but I am from Korea. I applied to CMC because of its awesome econ programs so I definitely wouldn’t mind about the two being polar opposites. Do you think I might be able to get FA (40k)? And what do you think about my chances at Colgate and Colby?

generous financial aid + you’d be considered URM.
Your scores/GPA are a bit too low at Carleton and it’s the first year they’ve accepted internationals who need FA to apply ED, so probably not the easiest, even though the location makes it a bit easier for you.

You could try for Davidson too. I currently attend and I had a similar GPA at the time of applying, and your SAT scores seem fairly solid for Davidson too though I’m not sure how competitive the international applicant pool is.

@IAmNotBenji I thought about it but didn’t put it on my list because it didn’t have econ/business as one of its popular majors… Should I give it a try?

It’s of the same caliber as all the schools on your list so a lot of the advantages that are common in top LACs like strong academics, close professor relationships, undergraduate-specific research opportunities, and small, tight-knit communities are also at Davidson. Its honor code is probably one of the most distinct features about Davidson because it means you can take self-scheduled exams and take-home exams are not uncommon, and you can often leave your laptop and stuff unattended in areas like the student union for hours at a time with no one touching it.

It’s located around 20-25 minutes away from Charlotte, where many graduates decide to go work as there’s a lot of opportunity there, especially since Charlotte is the #2 financial center in the United States after NYC. It’s close enough to a major airport so transportation to and from Davidson is not too hard. Davidson is known for the Davidson Trust, which does not give out loans as part of its financial aid package and is committed to covering 100% of demonstrated need. However, I do not think they are need-blind for international students, though, to be fair, Amherst is the only LAC that is.

@IAmNotBenji thanks for the input i will definitely consider. looks like an amazing school… but many supplementary essays hmmm… but still worth it. Do you really think I have a chance? ugh

You got rejected from CMC mainly because you applied for FA. CMC’s aid budget for international students is a joke. It would be better if the school did not offer any aid to internationals at all. Pomona’s aid budget isn’t spectacular either as it trails far behind from those of peer schools.

Hamilton gives GREAT financial aid. And if you’re interested in west coast schools that are generous to international students, the only one would be Reed College in Portland, OR. Whitman, Pomona, Stanford etc all give financial aid to intls, but are not generous enough in the context of their school and wealth.

I think I already explained this somewhere: Colby gives out a big portion of its intl aid budget to UWC students. These schools are similarly competitive in terms of international admission and aid (5%-10% acceptance rate).
