Anyhow back to the topic…on Facebook, people were posting their room assignments and someone said that they had on 4th floor Carman and that they were mad because they knew that the 4th floor (and other lower floors) had “no lights, no view, no nothing” to quote them. Is this true and also are the floors in Carman really that different?

I’m pretty sure there are lights on 4 and lower lol… Some downsides are however, if you ever take the elevator people will kill you (generally people shouldn’t take the elevator if you’re on 5 or lower— 5 will get you some snickers or glances)

What they might mean by “no view” is that if you’re on the side facing campus on I believe floor 7 or lower, you get a nice view of the brick walls of Lerner which is right next door. You need to be on floor 8 or higher to get a view of campus.

I’m on a high up south facing floor too and I’m pretty sure that you’re looking at downtown manhattan? Is that right? You’re higher than me, so your view is probably less blocked by buildings, but I’d say its a pretty good spot in general :]

As for the 4th floor–you probably just have a crappy view…I’m sure it’s fine

If you’re facing south in a lower floor on Carman, you’ll see frat row, which isn’t particularly exciting. And you won’t get much sunlight. Someone I know who had a top, south-facing Carman room said she had the best view of Manhattan.

The thing about lower floors is that they’re half-floors without proper lounges. This kind of sucks, since if you’re watching TV, you’ll have to deal with people going back and forth in the hallway and people getting on and off the elevator. It might also be hard to develop a sense of community, but this depends on who’s on your floor and how social you are.

And yes, you will get glares and behind-the-back talk if you try to use the elevator if you live below floor 5, but people kind of stop caring after awhile (as long as you’re not getting on when the whole elevator is crowded). Plus, if you’re really lazy, there’s always the freight elevator in the back of the building. The few times I used it, it was always empty.

On the other hand, you won’t have to walk up and down 10+ flights of stairs or wait forever for the elevator in the dead of night for the multiple fire drills you’re sure to have if you live on a lower floor.

When I lived in Hogan senior year, we had a nice view of the south-facing lower Carman floors. Let me tell you, we saw some sheit. There were some evenings a couple of us would play a little mario kart, crack open a bottle of wine, and watch some carman freshmen girls go nuts in their dorm room without bothering to close the blinds.

We’re not creepy, we weren’t using telescopes or anything, just being amused by general frosh mayhem. One night some guys got into what apparently was a heated argument, and I looked up what their room was, looked up their room extension, and prank-called them. Good times.

haha why does everyone who lives in Hogan have mariokart? I went over there a bunch of times this year and ended up playing mariokart. Lemme guess, you had an N64, right?

And yea carman’s fun to watch. once saw two ppl hooking up while i was studying on butler 4…so i guess some of the rooms in carmen have great views of butler.

In other news, I’m drunk."

…wow. This is what you do when you’re drunk?

So here’s the deal with Carman’s lower floors

North Side: 6th floor and below are looking at Lerner Hall’s mechanical shed (it’s the thing on Lerner’s roof). 7th Floor can kinda see over it. 3rd/4th floor North side and below might not have a window. Don’t remember.

South Side: Everyone has a window looking out on 114th Street. If you’re high enough and not opposite of Broadway/Hogan (i.e. you have a lower numbered room) you can see over frat row. Great great views.

Floor lounges: Floors 6 and up have their floor lounges at the end of the hall with a window looking out into broadway. Floors 2-5 don’t go all the way down (The radio station is on the corner of 114th and broadway and goes up 5 floors). Instead their lounge is across from the elevator lobby which is more towards the middle of the floor. Personally I liked this arrangement a lot. Because of the elevators and stairs, there was always traffic so you got to see everyone on the floor regularly just passing by. It’s a lot better than people give credit for.

I’ll note that I lived on Carman 5 facing south and Loved. it.

would you guys agree that this dorm has the best rooms?
I was looking at the floor plans on the website, and it looked that way.
Are all B rooms the same? and all A rooms the same?

and it’s a bathroom per 2 rooms? so this is the only freshman dorm that doesn’t have floor bathrooms?
how hard was it for you guys to get rooms in this dorm?

sorry about bursting in on your thread with all of my questions, but I don’t know where else to ask :]

Well, it depends on your definition of what a good dorm is. My room was pretty spacious (I think corner rooms tend to be bigger), but the walls were paper thin (and cinderblock is not very attractive). Having a/c was nice at the beginning when the days were still hot, but in the spring, the a/c doesn’t turn on until the beginning of May when it’s practically too late. I think what I appreciated the most was the shared private bathroom.

No, not all B rooms are the same. They’re not all the same size, and they don’t all have the same layout. All the dorm furniture will be the same, though. Not all A rooms are the same either. Again, they don’t all have the same layout. The A and B are just used to designate the rooms in each suite.

And yes, it’s the only freshman dorm that has shared private bathrooms. And it wasn’t hard to get a Carman room at all. If you put it as your first choice, you’ll probably get it. If not, I think you can swap with someone.

I was going by the little video/picture thing they have on the university website, and the B room on there looks pretty nice, that’s why I was wondering if they’re all the same.
I think I’m used to paper thin walls, since I live in Florida and construction here is pretty embarrassing, especially since these house are supposed to stand hurricanes, but I see how that could be a problem if you have really loud people living next door.

Thank you for all of your help! :]
I think all of my questions have been answered now
