*** Carnegie Mellon Class of 2019 RD Discussion and Results Thread***

Are there any numbers or a general feel of how many people are offered priority waitlist and how many people from PWL are admitted?

No one will know the first answer until April 10th.

And no one will know the second answer until May 1st.

ETA: sorry, misread 1st question. It doesn’t matter how many they ask; it only matters how many accept, which they may tell you after the 10th

There’s no place to add more information until May 1, right (for those on priority WL)? Do you have your guidance counselor call? Does it matter? We visited on Monday.

@bearlife CMU’s calculated EFC for our family is $154K. Our Gross is $80K. Since our son is considering economics as part of the Quantitative Scholar studies, CMU should be able to figure out the economics of their lack of a FA package and our families decision. Georgetown has been very proactive in contacting my son and he is getting excited about four years in D.C.

@Shoshonte‌ My D has appealed her FA, but after calling them again herself and not finding them to be very helpful (she actually thought the person she talked to was very rude), I think she is beginning to mentally see herself somewhere else. They told her at a November portfio review that she was in, and that’s where she been picturing herself for several months. She now realizes she will probably have to move on from that dream.

I don’t understand why they aren’t working with you on this-NYU must be considered a peer school and from everything I heard during our visit, they will work to meet the offers of peer schools? If you have grants at NYU bringing her COA down to under 20k I really don’t understand why CMU wont budge? I totally understand your daughter’s disappointment.

I’m going to have her email them again. She also received very good scholarships from two other private universities, but they’re both less than an hour from home, and she really wants to go further away, partly because she feels the connections she will make at CMU or NYU wiill give her a leg up upon graduation. I’m not completely convinced of that, but she may be right. The appeal form seemed to imply that appeals don’t often work, and when they do its not for a great deal more, certainly not a match like they claim. Someone from the theatre design department even promised to talk to the FA aid office, so it’s still a wait and see game. She’s just trying to move on so she’s not disappointed again.

@bearlife My discussion with FA went very well. They were very courteous and considerate. They went through the CSS profile form and found an error I had made, corrected it immediately, and revised the FA. The revised FA is in the ballpark of what we were expecting.

My son stayed with two CS majors during his sleeping bag weekend. Both students were from families earning less than $30K, and both had loans between $20K and $23K. Not cheap, but apparently they were fine with the loan amounts because a) CMU was their 1st choice and b) the job pro$pect$ when they come out.

@cheses100‌ Sorry for the delay; that’s right! You’d just take the standard ECE courses anyway. Do well and you’ll almost definitely get in. And since you need to take 2 CIT intro classes regardless of your major in CIT, in the worst case, 18-100 still counts.

Could anyone help me choose between CMU econ and NYU econ? Also, could someone tell me about the social life and workload at CMU, particularly in Econ?

@Shoshonte “Not cheap, but apparently they were fine with the loan amounts because a) CMU was their 1st choice and b) the job pro$pect$ when they come out.” I do remember reading Princeton Review (or some other guide) that CMU is not known for giving out generous FA packages for precisely the same reasons you mentioned.

@sinisalo‌ my mother just showed me a post ranking CMU as the 5th hardest university in the nation, with a student testifying that CPAs are .5 lower than GPAs. haha

Does anyone know how long a FA appeal takes?

Hi, all. It’s my understanding that the appeals take a couple of weeks. My daughter was accepted into the School of Music for voice. Congratulations on all of you who got a FAT letter! Our package wasn’t too bad but I have asked for a reconsideration. If they don’t give us a bit more, our out of pocket looks to be about $15K this year.

@dgreen1207

Wow, $15K per year is incredibly low already.

Quick question- How many of you applied to 2 departments within the same school at CMU, is their a different status tab for that in your where am i in the process page?

Does anyone else have “Schedule C” under financial aid documents received? What is that?

If our out of pocket were $15000 (which is actually much more in line with the EFC from FAFSA, rather then the $40000 they seem to expect us to pay), we would accept admission immediately.

@Upstate13 - I would go with Cooper Union, under the radar treasure and much more affordable than CMU.

@hungryteenager - Schedule C is a tax form that attaches to your tax form if you are self-employed or have reportable self employment income.
