I am wondering if ED is right for me. I want to study mechanical engineering. CMU has always been my dream school.
SAT: 1540 (780 Math, 760 English)
Weighted GPA: 5.4
Almost all grades 100 or 99%
Class rank: either 1 or 2 (school stopped sharing class rank with us this past year but can still share it with colleges)
8 APs from freshman to junior year - all 5’s including Physics C: Mechanics and Calc BC
Taking 3 AP’s senior year and Multivariable Calc through dual enrollment with Johns Hopkins online
Extracurriculars: FRC robotics team captain, Pennsylvania Governors School for the Sciences, Math club founder and president, Dignity and Respect Committee member, Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science, jazz band piano soloist, school musical pit band, student council representative, school ambassador, school service group member
Work Experience: Part-time food prep and dishwasher at a restaurant
Awards: National Merit Scholar semifinalist, several departmental awards through school, Society of Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh essay contest 2nd place winner, National Chemistry Olympiad national exam nominee, 24th in PA Math League, 1st place at states for PJAS
I am concerned that ED might not be right for me. My calc 3 class this year is through a program I am not very familiar with. I am not sure I would be able to keep an A in that class for the year. This would not show on the transcript I send in for ED, but it would at the end of the year. I worry that if I got a C or B in that class I might have my offer from CMU rescinded and I would not have anything else lined up. Do you know if CMU would likely rescind ED admission over a subpar grade or two? The commitment to cancel all other options with a slight risk of rescindment scares me. If CMU did EA, I would probably do that instead.
Additionally, I got a guaranteed admission offer to Pitt’s 5-year engineering master’s program, so I don’t want to throw that out immediately. Do you have any advice?
==> Applicants should submit official transcripts from all secondary schools attended https://www.cmu.edu/admission/admission/undergraduate-admission-requirements
Question: If dual enrollment courses taken at local community colleges while at high school, do we also need to send transcripts during the application based on the wordings above? Thanks.
If you’re considering Pitt(or any other school) and want to weigh your options, you should not apply ED anywhere.
Has anyone heard a word about the date?
Usually it is the saturday before the ed deadline at 9am (aka in two days)… I’m a current student here who is going to be an admin for a discord server for all the accepted students so we are very aware and preparing diligently lol
What date are you and @CSR0104 referring to?
I know in the past, CMU has emailed about the date ahead of time, but we haven’t received an update yet. Do you think it won’t be this Saturday?
ED1 decision release date
This year they changed their applications so they only downloaded them all at once the day after they were due. That is why we didn’t get confirmation emails until after the due date for ED1. I wouldn’t be surprised if they released them all on December 15 itself.
I am shocked at how empty this thread is compared to previous years leading up to the release date. Does anyone have any information or educated guesses about when the decisions will be released this week?
Or is there a chance that they will delay decisions like UGA because they haven’t gotten through them all on time? Being this close to December 15th without hearing any updates worries me.
Hi there!!! I’m currently a Freshman at CMU and I can confidently tell you that you are more than qualified to be here. I had around a 5.2 GPA with 2 C’s and a few B’s here and there. I even had a W from one of my college classes on my transcript.
Out of all of the college application processes I went through, I felt like CMU was the most holistic and genuinely takes all of your information into account. They won’t rescind you for a few “bad” grades. I was scared my whole senior year that they would rescind me - but here I am. It’s not worth it to live in that fear.
I know the ED deadline is over so if you didn’t apply for ED1, I would suggest applying for ED2. It’s great that you already have a 5 year program lined up but with your credentials I think you would do very well at CMU and the prestige that it has would definitely benefit you. I am not sure if CMU has a 5 year master’s MechE program, I would do more research, but I know they have lots of 5 year programs in SCS.
Ultimately, you will do great wherever you end up. But no, CMU will not rescind you for a few poor scores.
They do this every year. Colleges are the worst at giving updates
Hi! I’m a current student at CMU as well. is the discord run by an on-campus organization or is it a personal project? Either way, how can I join? I would love to welcome our new class and be of any help that I can.
Thanks. That puts my mind at ease. I already applied ED1, so I get to enjoy hearing back soon, but until CMU says how soon soon is, I will be anxiously waiting.
Thank you so much. I now know that I won’t have to keep checking a bunch throughout the day.
Just to let everyone know. ED results are in.
anyone applying cmu’s ed2?
yep! I am an ED2 applicant for mathematical sciences at MCS
