Carnegie Mellon Qatar Reputation

How well is Carnegie Mellon Qatar known in the US? Do top US unis like MIT discredit it because it isnt the main campus? I guess basically, what I’m asking is how top unis look at secondary university campuses such as CMU-Q, NYUAD, etc.

Don’t have any knowledge on how others look at these campuses. All I know about the Qatar campus is that when one of DS’s apartment-mates had a financial issue prior to his senior year, they permitted him to go to Qatar where he did some teaching or other helping out in lieu of reduced or waived tuition, and it permitted him to graduate. So I’m assuming significantly less opportunities there for which the school is willing to wave some carrots to attract those who wouldn’t have normally gone there, but don’t know how others view this education.

Based on some searching I did, CMU’s Qatar campus grants degrees that are literally equal to CMU’s normal degrees (from an NPR article):

While that’s nice and all, there’s still something to be said about a campus that has a very rich student body due to the fact that most who apply come from affluent families. Also, a lot of these campuses, namely CMU’s; Northwestern’s; NYU’s, are focused on only one or two certain subjects, gaining a reputation as a “boutique” school. There’s nothing wrong with that at all, though, especially if you’re going to be majoring in what the school’s respective focus is (in this case, CMU’s being business/finance).

If you wanna read more from that article: [Middle East Woos U.S. Colleges : NPR](Middle East Woos U.S. Colleges : NPR)

I know that their degree is the same, but is the education looked at as being on par with that of the US campus?

As I said, these campuses have a specific focus. If you were to major in their respective “focus”, there’s not much doubting that the quality of education is extremely close if not equal.
