Carnegie Mellon Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS) and AP/EA 2018

I would also like to clarify that if you applied to any program through the Summer Opportunities for Access & Inclusion app and are accepted, you will receive a full-tuition scholarship to whichever program you are selected for, whether that be your first or second choice. This includes all of the pre-college programs such as SAMS, Artificial Intelligence, AP/EA, Architecture, Art, Design, Drama, Music, and Game Academy.

If you applied via this website: https://admission.enrollment.cmu.edu/pages/pre-college/ and not through the Summer Opportunities for Access & Inclusion app, you will not receive a full-tuition scholarship for the program you are accepted to. The website states that applications for those who would like to pay for the programs (excluding SAMS and the AI programs which you cannot pay to get into) are due on April 15th.

Just wanted to clear up any misconceptions.

Anyone been accepted by the AI Program yet? Seems like the decisions for AI are going to come out much later than SAMS

Yeah, I’ve heard of no one in AI in yet. How many spots for AI available this year?

@MyGPAIsAnL Because this is the first year, I can’t figure out how many people they plan to accept. You’d have to call them.

I think I might’ve screwed myself out of SAMS by also applying for the AI program, because they probably won’t have as many applicants for it.

@1TigerJ894 What do you mean? You think that AI doesn’t have enough spots available?

Sorry for being so annoying and asking so many questions and mb if someone already asked this but when they say they have trips planned like amusement parks, museums, baseball games etc, are each of these events an extra cost?

@1TigerJ894 You’re only truly screwed if you don’t get into either.

@GlitterStar100 Nope, you would just use your spending money to buy food at those places. The RA’s will be in-charge of the budget for the events and a large, but limited number of people will be able to attend them. Most of the events are first come, first served via sign up sheet in the Schlounge (you’ll know what this is later).

Hey, I have a question! I applied to the Pre-College Art Program and I’m planning on also applying for a scholarship, is there any way I could receive a full scholarship (because I really wouldn’t be able to afford a $10k program), even though I didn’t apply using the SAMS website?

@ak2018 What was your GPA?
Just wonderin…

@ak2018 Hey, I have a question! I applied to the Pre-College Art Program, and I’m planning on also applying for a scholarship, is there any way I could receive a full scholarship (because I really wouldn’t be able to afford a $10k program), even though I didn’t apply using the SAMS website?

Does anybody know when I will get the acceptance email? I saw I got in through the directory, and I’d like to know about the official email.

@ak2018 I applied for the AP/EA program but with that program as my only choice. Do you think I could email and say I would also be interested in the SAMS program or is it too late?

@CoolChem You should get one sometime this week.

@ferncuad I would say it’s likely too late, especially if all you want to do is notify them that you would like to consider SAMS as your second choice. Anyone that puts SAMS as their second choice, I would not say it’s 100% certain, but its his highly likely that those who did will not be chosen due to the sheer competitiveness and the amount people that apply to SAMS. The acceptance order goes from those who applied for SAMS as their first choice, to those who were waitlisted initially. They’ll likely never get to those who put it down as their second choice as they accept people with any remaining spots from the waitlist. I, unfortunately, do not know how the waitlist works (either by reviewing over those who were initially waitlisted in order or by stats).

@CoolChem When did you submit your application/supporting documents?

I already commented it @Hermalez lol, but I started 01/12 and finished 2/5. I turned in my transcript at the beginning of Feb and everything else at the beginning of March.

Is there any way I can see the names of all those in Precollege programs in the directory? I want to get a count to get an idea of how many spots available and possibly how far they are on admissions decisions

@ak2018 (I don’t know if you saw my previous question, but I really need to know this info, if you could help me out!) Hey, I have a question! I applied to the Pre-College Art Program and I’m planning on also applying for a scholarship, is there any way I could receive a full scholarship (because I really wouldn’t be able to afford a $10k program), even though I didn’t apply using the SAMS website?

@MyGPAIsAnL the only way you can search for people in a specific program/department is if you got accepted and created an account and then use the advanced search option in the directory.

As of now, there are about 530 students listed on the directory under the pre-college program. None of them specify which summer program they got accepted for, so it doesn’t really do much to provide an idea of how many more spots are open - especially since names are put onto the directory before people secure their position in the pre-college program

@MyGPAIsAnL Only someone actually enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University as an ungraduate or graduate student can search by department using their Andrew ID. If you know someone like that, ask them for a favor. If someone’s on this thread that falls under that description, it would be very helpful for them to share this kind of information
