Carnegie Mellon Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS) and AP/EA 2018

Kind of having a crisis here, I found it weird that I never received a confirmation email after sending in my application but now I haven’t gotten a declination or an acceptance email and I’m not in the directory on the website.

I fear I might have never been considered to begin with…

Also, on my SAMS login page, I just see the upload materials page, does anyone else see this and should I still be worried?

same

FWIW, I have nearly the exact same stats as xyphea, except weaker GPA (little bit of uh, a slip up last semester) and no STEM ECs, still got rejected. I also submitted everything at literally the last minute, so initial app on 3/1 and supplemental essay on 3/15 at 11:59 pm. It’s whatever I guess, wasn’t meant to be. :-<

just called and was rejected…

Applied in mid January
4.0 GPA
Top ~3% of my class
1160 SAT, 26 ACT (first time taking either)
Taken a lot of AP/College classes
President and Founder of an astronomy club
Various other clubs and STEM activities
Low income family, low income rural area, female, first to go to college

Sigh… It’s okay. I’m glad I know (kind of relieved, I can stop worrying now) so I can concentrate on finding other summer activities. I think it was my test scores that got me. I’m a camp counselor for 4H so I’ve got that over the summer, and I think I’m gonna try to get a volunteer position at a hospital or a research position at a college near me.

Not the end of the world, but SAMS really would have helped me and boost my confidence applying to my top colleges in the fall.

Congrats to everyone who got in, hope you have tons of fun  And thank you to everyone on this forum who have made this whole process bearable for the past 4 months!

what specifically are people saying when they call the office? When I called the lady said she wasn’t able to tell me my decision…?

I just called and got rejected from AI and SAMS :frowning:
female but high income, asian
ACT 35
GPA 3.9
lots of STEM extracurriculars and STEM job

congrats to those who got in! For anyone still looking to do something STEM related this summer, I found a summer program through IDTECH which sounds really cool!

Ahhhh I’m stuck in an orchestra rehearsal and by the time I’m out the CMU office is closed

@plp000 I did IDTECH for a week at Vanderbilt two summers ago, it was actually pretty fun.

Rejected from SAMS
White male, middle income
34 ACT
1550 SAT
4.0/4.5 GPA
Good essays and Rec
Mediocre EC’s

I wish I knew what they were looking for in an applicant…

@plp000 did you apply for AI as your first choice? What number did you call to ask about AI and what time are they open until on Saturdays? Did anyone else specifically get a rejection for AI yet?

Do people who get accepted into AI get in the directory?

@silvercloud the cmu office is open 8-12 est on saturdays

@Daverybest We aren’t sure, but the general consensus is no. No one has reported being accepted into AI as far as I can tell, and when I called the office, I was told that they would work on AI next week.

I called the admissions office to get my AI decision. AI was my first choice, I think the decisions are already made for AI but they haven’t sent them out yet.

@plp000 wish you the best of luck from here, you’re making me so stressed

omg so if you call in for AI, they will tell you if you got in or not?

@mooncake17 apparently so but the cmu office is closed until Monday… rip

Guys honestly let’s stop bothering them and just wait for our results. Personally, I’d rather have a email rejection than a person telling me “you didn’t get in”, its that human contact that makes it incredibly painful. Let the office do their thing and I’m certain we’ll find out soon enough

Okay, thanks for the info!

@chunkylegs @Hermalez @mic347 @alohayoti @atomicapple0 @astromae2001 @plp000 I’m sorry SAMS and AI were not able to offer you a spot. At this point, I’d recommend finding a backup plan.

@MyGPAIsAnL AI might not be in the directory.

@Taurino2001 It unfortunately does.

@nontranslationalwog @CRDBRD That might mean you have been waitlisted. I recently talk with one person who decided to give up his spot for SAMS, so if you are on that list, you probably will get off.

@Xyphea Congrats!

@ChubChub Yes and yes. Girls are considered minorities.in STEM and CMU did recently applaud itself for the class of 2021 being the first majorly-female class.
