Carnegie Mellon Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS) and AP/EA 2018

@Youngmis123 my son applied in November and has not heard back yet.

@esperantist That’s perfectly fine as well. The teacher can just email to them on your behalf.

@malfoy7 Yes, I believe a letter should be sent out, once all of the spots are filled after people are picked from the wait list, to everyone who did not get in. I imagine you should get that letter by the end of April.

@ak2018 Not much substance in the youtube video you linked to in Post #94. Glad they had fun, but…

@ChezCurie Yeah, it wasn’t meant for the substance. It was mainly to show that the social aspect of SAMS will be great and fun, if you make it.

@ak2018 This is a pretty stupid question, but once I uploaded everything I need to, how do I actually submit the application? There’s no submit button anywhere.

@esperantist There should be a submit button on the initial app, before you submit your transcripts and LORs. In the supplement portal, I do not believe there should be a submit button. After you upload everything, you should be fine.

@ak2018 that clears things up. Thanks.

I realized i turned in the rough draft version of my short answer with a sentence missing and a few grammar edits so I emailed the correct copy. Do you think they’ll hold this against me during the admissions process

Hello, how come SAMS require two different letters of recommendation(or is it just the same letter that they’re asking for twice)? There was a recommendation section in the application that asked for the recommender’s name, position, etc. But after I finished the application, they were asking me to upload a recommendation letter again. Do I upload the same letter from the recommender or get a new recommendation?

@esperantist You’re welcome.

@succeed1253 As long as they review it again, you should be fine. I, however, would wait for them to see what they say.

@mir7160 That is a mistake in their application. Last year, we had the ability to send two LORs, however, due to an increased number of applicants, this will not be the case this year. They should have received it.

Any word on if they have or when they will start sending out acceptances?

@ak2018 Thank you for all the information provided.

Hi I just recently found out about this amazing opportunity and started working on my application. Do you think that submitting an application this late will even be considered? After reading the comments on here, it seems that people have known about this program and applied as early as January and since they accept on a rolling basis, I don’t want to get my hopes up only to be rejected because I didn’t apply months prior to the actual deadline.

@Tennismomto5 I called yesterday and they said a bunch of decisions have been made. No new word on when they will be released. I hope, at least for the applicants sake, that they don’t release all of the decisions on the same day. That would be quite different from last year.

@ny_mom3 You’re welcome! :slight_smile:

@rlee01 Your application would still be considered as the deadline for a submitted application is March 1st, with the supplement documents deadline being March 15th. They will likely keep reviewing applications until mid-April.

For the upload supplemental materials section, they ask for self-reported standardized test scores but when I go to upload it, there’s only an option for a transcript. So do I upload my transcript or a screenshot of my SAT score?

@mir7160 I don’t believe you should have to upload your scores in that section since you should have already self-reported it. I would say to upload your transcript. Did anyone else face this problem?

@ak2018 Our son just got his ACT scores and they are not good (he knows that this is a weakness for him). Do you think he should send them in?

I don’t believe that was an issue for me… I just put in my scores in the online application part. They were also on my transcript that I ordered from my school.

If anyone get’s accepted, can they tell the rest of us? Pls… :smiley:

@Tennismomto5 If the new score is better than the score that he initially submitted, definitely send it. If not, I wouldn’t bother. SAMS accepts those with “low” and high standardized scores, which is why they have the free SAT prep course to take while you’re there. I would say a 25+ ACT score would be good coupled with good essays. I initially had a 1250 SAT and recently got a 1390 on the SAT after SAMS and their spectacular test prep. Another SAMS friend of mine had his SAT score jump about 150+ points after SAMS, so they do have a really good prep program.

@malfoy7 Honestly, having to wait for you guys to hear back reminds me of how stressful it was waiting for my decision last year. :)) I literally saw the email in my inbox during my 5th period engineering class and screamed with joy!!! That letter made March 15th a day I’d never forget! Hopefully some of you guys can experience this as well.

BTW, to anyone who gets accepted, I have multiple files that were sent to me last year containing a boatload of information so you’ll have that readily available.
