Carnegie Mellon vs. Georgia Tech Engineering

which school has a better reputation, job opportunities, research opportunities, etc?

CMU on all counts

Definitely CMU (an engineering peer of Cornell).

One of GT’s adminstration buildings (Administration & Finance and adjoining to Tech Tower is called the Carnegie Building. Yes it is the same Carnegie that founded Carnegie Mellon. Georgia Tech has a much larger campus, bigger and probably better attended sports programs, in a warmer clime, better airline connections and nice shopping.

Your first point really has nothing to do with anything.

Secondly, larger campuses are quite a detriment to providing a close-knit and accessible college environment. Many times I was thankful for being able to run/walk to a class rather than having to take a bus or use a car/bike. Superfast wireless and computer opportunities are also everywhere on CMU’s campus (including newly installed computer’s in the University Center). CMU’s campus is also a traditional green college campus but is also a 10 min walk from downtown Pittsburgh as well as Upitt. Pittsburgh is also the nation’s 2nd largest college town after Boston, of course.

Also, new development such as the Gates building (Yes… the same Bill Gates who is a billionaire) is currently being built, showcasing CMU’s rise and dominance in the technical and computer fields.

Sports…sure we are D3, but the Steelers is all we need. Nothing beats a street riot when the Steelers won the Superbowl.

Airline connections… what does that even mean? Pittsburgh International Airport was rated 2nd in the U.S. and JetBlue carries many college students home at an affordable price.

Shopping - This also makes no sense… does Georgia Tech have an Edmunton mall inside it? (Canadian reference) The waterfront, Pittsburgh’s free buses (offered to CMU students) and many other areas including Squirrel Hill, Oakland, Downtown, Walnut Street, Southside, etc.) are all amazing places to shop and arguably better than GAtech’s surrounding area (I lived in Decatur, GA for many years and I have visited GAtech).

Finally, what is a clime… climate?

PS: GAtech’s male/female ratio as well as their girls are surprisingly even WORSE than CMU’s. Wikipedia states:

"The student body consists of 18,500 graduate and undergraduate students, and more than 900 full-time instructional faculty.[28]

Historically, female enrollment at engineering institutions has been quite low and Georgia Tech is no exception. With about twice as many male students as females, Georgia Tech has one of the most unbalanced male-to-female ratios of any co-ed university."
“As of Spring 2007, the freshman class of 2006–2007 had a ratio of 68.8% to 31.2%.[31] The highest freshman ratio in the past few years (counting only Fall and Spring semesters)[32] was Spring 2006, with a ratio of 70.5% to 29.5%.[31]”

PPS: The poster’s question was “which school has a better reputation, job opportunities, research opportunities, etc?”

And the nod was to CMU for all of these. I don’t think he wanted to know about your airline or shopping pitch.

I imagine, lfe, has decided on which college he is going/currently attending. As an older parent with son, CMU '06, dual engineering degrees, many sashes at graduation; Discovered that shopping and what you can do after your studies is very important. He often found that for him to get back to the west coast, he first had to fly to ATL or DFW. Georgia Tech and CMU had the same programs that he wanted he just didn’t like to be in warmer weather of Gerogia. If you ask our son what he thought of CMU, he’d say that he wouldn’t have gone to any other school for the academics, but the most important aspects were his new friends and experiences (relationalships).

We don’t have twins or other children with one child who went to CMU and other to GT, at the same time, in the same majors; therefore, I can’t comment on the comparable academics, job or research opportunities. I can only comment what our son did while he was there.

As you get further along in your career, you will discover, as has everyone else has discovered, that networkings will take take you further than where you went to school or what grades you get.

PS: Owning the school before being accepted is a dangerous position to take.

thanks for all the info

i would say CM is less focused on engineering than gatech. that could be an advantage or disadvantage.
i would pick GT though, it has more respect in the engineering community than CM. i wouldn’t even say cornell is better than GT.

false. you get better job offers out of gt.

ivies are OVERRATED for engineering. yes i said it. O-V-E-R-R-A-T-E-D. its just a fancy name that does not put as much into its engineering program as it does into its “women’s philosophy of african american greek dance films” major.

Just to correct some things said by lfe…

CMU is a 10 minute walk from Oakland, where University of Pittsburgh is, which is not downtown Pittsburgh, although there is a lot to do there. To get downtown, you take one of the fairly frequently running buses, and it takes about 15 minutes.

JetBlue does take many students back to New York City for affordable prices, but JetBlue doesn’t have amazing coverage of the US. To get back to Dallas, I typically have a connection because American is so expensive. It’s almost impossible to fly direct from PIT to SJC, although I would hope that it can be done to SFO. I’ve had to take connections to get to Houston, sometimes, too. The airport is a nice and never a hassle to fly out of, but the coverage does leave something to be desired.

Explorer that is quite a strong statement to make, care to prove it?
[College of Engineering - Post-Graduation Survey Results - Information for Students and Alumni - Career Center - Student Affairs](http://www.studentaffairs.cmu.edu/career/employ/salary/cit.html)
Here is CMU’s engineering postgrad surveys, please show me GAtech’s.

Please also note the quality of companies as well as the median salary (such as Tepper/Wharton sharing the same 60k median but Wharton grads achieving more top companies).

Edit: I can only find Gatech’s ECE salaries, which are around 60k while CMU’s is around 80k avg/median. But of course, this is a strongpoint for CMU so I’ll await your full and complete survey data/link with companies included please.

"Sports…sure we are D3, but the Steelers is all we need. Nothing beats a street riot when the Steelers won the Superbowl. "

Go Browns! I’m bringing all my Cleveland sports stuff to CMU next year. :P

Georgia Tech is higher ranked than CMU by the U.S. News and World report. Tech is ranked as the number 4 undergrad and graduate engineering school in the nation. #1 in industrial, and #2 in Biomedical. Plus their other engineering programs are ranked within the top 10. Also Tech has a bigger and and really beautiful campus located in downtown Atlanta. Its a city campus but its very nice! Georgia Tech also has the second fastest wi-fi connection in the nation, next to the pentagon of course. Tech is an awesome and amazing school. Absolutely love it
