Carnegie Mellon vs Pitt

Which university should I pick? I do realize that Carnegie has a higher overall and major ranking, put I still don’t know. My major for Carnegie is computer engineering. And for Pitt, I am doing a PharmD program. Witch is getting a doctorate in 6 years. Which is the main reason I selected Pitt. I am also concerned about the tuition, for Carnegie it’s about $40,000, but it’s like $18,000 for pitt. Which should I chose. I feel the same about both majors.

The program is totally up to what you truly want to do. But do not pick based on tuition. I was accepted to both and with the financial aid at CMU, it would end up being cheaper than Pitt anyways.

first choose what major you would like to concentrate in

these are two distinct paths

few schools in the world are equal to CM’s computer engineering/computer science program (MIT and Stanford are at the same level)…

I would lean Pitt.

Pitt Pharmacy is one of the tops in the country and if you don’t take the 6 year program, you’ll have to do a typical 3 year post-bachelors program in Pharmacy after you graduate if you later decide that is really what you want to do. You’ll most likely lose a year, which will be one of the more expensive ones because it will be at the grad level (and you’ll have to take the PCAT and apply and all that stuff).

On the other hand, if you go to Pitt for Pharamcy and decide not to do it, Pitt does have its own Computer Science program and you can easily switch into that (or even try to double major). Conversely, CMU does not have a pharmacy program.

Keep in mind that the two schools are right next to each other though, and you might be able to transfer from one to the other relatively easily since you’ve been accepted to both. Also, you can take classes that aren’t offered at the other school for the home school’s tuition, although you’ll get a lower priority to enroll compared to if you were a student at that school.

It is a much less expensive to start at Pitt for $18K and switch than to start at CMU for $40K and/or then become a Pharmacist through a graduate program if you decide to switch.

But if you figure out which path you really want to do, that probably will make your mind up for you.
