Can anyone fill me in on what is in the Welcome Letter? On my child’s CMU Admission Documents Sent, it indicates that the letter/packet has been sent mid-April but we have not received it. In contacting both normal Admissions and the MT admissions all we get is don’t worry it is coming. First phone call indicated they wait until they can do a mass mailing for cheaper postal rates, this was understandable. The next couple of phone calls indicated we will be bombarded with tons of letters and it should be happening any day. It is now over 6 weeks, are we missing some things that we should know about. I’m starting to wonder for $54,000 a year…

I know a kid who was accepted and is coming in the fall. I will ask his mom if they have received these mailings. Stay tuned. (Our only experience with CMU’s office of admissions was for precollege and frankly, though my kid loved the program, the administrative part of it was messy and disorganized. They lost her application and all the accompanying documents twice and were on the verge of asking us to reassemble the entire thing when they found someone from the office had it. LOL!) I don’t think that this disorganization has any bearing on the quality of the training, however.

I believe the Welcome Letter/Packet is “The Official Carnegie Mellon University Fat Letter.” It’s a spiral-bound packet that contains the official congratulations letter. The packet also contains info on planning a visit in April; info on campus life including housing and dining; info on Pittsburgh; and other enrollment info including the 09-10 academic calendar, freshman orientation, and health insurance. My D received it in late March. Everything else we received has related to financial aid.

My S received his “Welcome Letter” the first week of April. That letter, however, did not include his scholarship/financial aid package. This was sent separate. So, to answer your question, the only two really important things you MAY be missing at this point are the financial aid offer and the housing application (which I think was due on-line 5/31). However, without the “welcome letter”, you can still log-in to the website as a new student and get everything you may need that way. Don’t get too excited about the welcome letter, it was for show anyway (besides the “official” acceptance letter). This was our experience.

Thank you everyone. We did receive the Fat Letter but admissions said the Welcome Packet was different stating it would have a CD or Zip drive that we could work off of for housing, meal plan, etc. We did navigate the website and sign up for housing. Still trying to work out financial aid and meal plan (not sure what is best). At least it sounds as if I can stop worrying about this, we seem to be on track with the rest of you. Thanks again!

Hello mtinfo24

We received a Carnegie Mellon Keychain with a memory stick, it has all the admission information needed for the fall. It also has all types of forms that are to be downloaded, and sent back (health insurance, parent info, etc.) Hope this Helps.

Sorry it took so long to post we have been out of town.
That is what we have been looking for and never received. We did accomplish everything on line without it. Still working on loans but will get there too! When we called last week Monday trying to find out more info and indicated we had not received anything (again) we just got our original receipt for our deposit this past Friday. What a coincidence. I will be happy when this first year is over since this is all very new to us.
