Haha. My oldest brother went to Dartmouth. My middle brother goes to UNC. Trust me. I don’t even care if you don’t go to UNC. Don’t go to Dartmouth. Don’t.

Have all the scholarships been disbursed/recipients been notified? If so, how?

I was fortunate to be accepted to UNC, but the 32k OOS price tag is worrisome, at best. I’m out of town so I can’t check my snail mail (I received a letter from CFI about Stafford Loans before I left). I’ve logged into myUNC many times, and I did receive my financial aid award awhile ago (I missed the aid cutoff by about $100), but the aid award link is currently down (I can’t click the 07-08 button, it’s not there), though I can still get to the financial need calculator (which tells me I get zero need based aid). I can’t exactly pay my EFC. I’m trying to work things out and see how much I can make in summer, what debt is reasonable, etc, but obviously merit money would make things MUCH easier (as it would for 99% of people).

Any ideas? How were winners notified? I’m still holding out hope, but not much. Any non-local outside scholarships still taking applications?

Oh and one last thing: UNC is far and away my first choice, and the private schools I applied to would cost me about as much as UNC would (about 1-2k less, actually, but every little bit helps). So you can see why I’m concerned.

Sorry to bump this thread up further, but does/would anyone know?

They had a number of scholarship days awhile ago. I think everything is finished/handed out though.

Croatia,

I’ve had a child in Dartmouth and Carolina. Please feel free to PM me with any questions you may have about the differences of the schools. Believe me, there are many.

The big cons of Dartmouth: Weather, weather, weather. Also, my s was not crazy at all about the “D” system, where your class goes its separate ways basically after freshman years. It was hard to keep up the friendships with the many freshman you met the first year.

Suffice it to say, my third child will be attending Carolina in the Fall, and we are beyond thrilled. It is simply difficult to find the $180K justification. Yes, there is a strong Dartmouth network for my S who graduated several years ago, but I suspect (and hope!) the same will be true for my other children as they graduate from UNC.

School spirit seems much, much stronger at UNC. Much more to do in the adjacent towns (unless you are an avid skiier), and the whole transportation scene is significantly better with RDU airport less than 30 minutes away. It was always a huge hassle and expense to get into Hanover.

Good luck with your decision. They are both wonderful, wonderful schools, and I hope you will be happy wherever you end up!
