carry on luggage - suggestions needed

I know that there have been many threads on luggage of all types, but for each traveler there are different requirements - so here are my questions:

There are 3 of us traveling together. We want to take just carry on luggage. One laptop will be among the items traveling. We have three bags that fit in the overhead and they are the type that are short enough to fit horizontally so they are unlikely to cause a problem there (I had a bigger bag that they always had a problem with because it was an inch or so too long for this previously.) I thought backpacks would hold the most and fit under the seat in front.

Do you have any suggestions for good backpacks that hold a lot and fit under the seat in front? Or other type of carry on that will hold a lot and fit under the seat in front? Also any suggestions for a backpack that will hold a lap top (average size - not too large or too small) and other stuff?

Thanks to all.

Two of my traveling kids have been using the eBags Weekender Convertible
[eBags Weekender eTech Convertible - eBags.com](http://www.ebags.com/product/ebags/weekender-etech-convertible/15026?productid=56582)
as a carry on. If you compare the capacity of different bags, you will find that this one is really big on the inside relative to its appearance. This was key for my D who traveled around Europe on those cheesy airlines that charge very little for the flight and much more for luggage.

I’m not actually sure if this bag will fit under the airplane seat. You would need to check the measurements. Lastly, eBags does make a wheeled laptop convertible too but we don’t have one.

ebags is fabulous. You can select several pieces and do a comparison chart on them, so you see all of the specs in front of you. Their shipping is incredibly fast, and free returns. Be sure you check the specific airline’s website though, as they all seem to have slightly different specifications now. And it all depends on who is standing at the security entrance. We bought my son a Nautica rolling duffel, he stuffed it to the max, and Jetblue approved it for carryon, it fit in the overhead bin and all was well. I went home and ordered two more of the same. Went to visit him for Parents Weekend, and flew Delta. At JFK the security guard, said it was questionable, but let us through. No problem. At MIA, no way. Made us check them. Frankly, the prototype they have at the entrance to see if luggage will fit, wouldn’t hold anything bigger than a Macy’s gift box!

As for under the seat, I use a large Harve Chapelier tote bag from Bloomingdales, carry it instead of a pocketbook. Not the same as a backpack, but a great travel bag and totally light weight.

H & I traveled on a 3-week trip to Europe with two roller bags that fit in the OH bin as you describe and two backpacks. We each had a laptop. The backpack was great because the laptops fit in it. I rolled up a cloth purse in the bottom of the backpack so when I arrived I had my purse. You can really cram a lot of stuff in them. Also my roller back has an expandable zippered extension in case it was needed on the return trip. Mine where just cheap Wal-Mart backpacks with lots of pockets.
