Carry-on one-suiter garment bag?

Is there such a thing as a one-suiter piece of luggage that meets the carry-on restrictions? DS is headed on a business trip and would hate to have to check his bag when a business associate will be meeting him at the airport.

I would contact the airline to be sure, but it should be fine if it meets the requirements.

eBags is a great resource:

I use the Ricardo, 2 compartment 21" carryon. The one compartment hold hangers and suits and the main one the rest. I can travel for a week with it. Although I think mine might be an older 22". I can get up to 3 light weight summer woman’s pants suits in the top compartment. Plus it rolls. I have used this for over 10 years, did have to replace it once it was so beat up when I traveled 3 weeks a month.

H can travel for a week in a 21" carryon, including packing his suit. I don’t know how he does it!! For a three day trip, I have to pack the whole back of the car.

Singersmom, the Ricardo one looks very promising. It’s hard to believe it’s only 14" across. It certainly doesn’t look like a carry-on in the photo on eBags. Reasonably priced too. Thanks.

I want one. But I am really really trying to curb my love of luggage. Some people buy shoes; some buy jewelry. I just can’t resist: Suitcases. Tote bags. Briefcases. etc., etc.

Ordered it! Thanks again. MM2K, first time I’ve heard of this addiction  I’ll stick with mine for dark chocolate.

I got the Skyroll over the shoulder version. Not the wheelie version.
I picked one up at the local Men’s Warehouse for my son’s audition in Boston. It worked great.

Note: The over the shoulder version will fit in many of the smaller plane’s overheads, whereas wheelies have to be checked at the plane.

Thanks, singersmom, I just ordered it, too! My husband has been asking for a rolling carryon that will fit a sportcoat or suit. This one fits the bill perfectly and might even arrive in time for Father’s Day.

ellemenope, I’d love some hints on how your husband manages to pack a suit in such a small suitcase without it being a mess of wrinkles when he arrives. I’m a terrible packer when it comes to men’s jackets and so is my husband. He has always traveled with a garment bag because of it but some airlines are getting real picky about what they’ll let him carry on so that’s why he wanted the rolling carryon.

Ooh, just crossposted with OperaDad. I like that Skyroll! Wish I’d seen your post before I ordered the one from eBags!

I heard about “rolling” suits/shirts/pants years ago. Only recently have I seen Skyroll that designed luggage based on that packing method. The idea behind rolling is to avoid sharp turns that causes creases in the outfits.

The Skyroll wheelie wraps the suit around the outside of the wheelie, thus only causing the suit to make relatively gentle 90 degree folds. I had a wheelie similar to the one linked to on ebags. The one I had caused at least 2 tight 180 degree folds.

One drawback of the Skyroll is that you can’t put your suits on hangers. Thus it takes a few extra minutes to pack and unpack your bag. Also, if you have a full length dress, you are better off using a real garment bag and checking in.

When I pack with the folds, I also use a cleaner’s bag around the suits. It lessons the creases. I have never had a hard time hanging them out when I arrived. By the next morning all were fine to wear.

By time you get to be platinum on two different airlines, you learn some techniques along the way.

I put the suit in last. I start with dress shoes and fill the socks, underwear, and shirts in around them, stuffing socks and underwear in corners and nooks so that there is no unused space. When everything else is in I hang the suit on a cheap wire hanger, and like Singersmom I cover it in a plastic cleaners bag. I then fold it carefully in half and lay it on top of the rest of the stuff and tuck the hook of the wire hanger down the side of the suitcase. I then carefully close and zip the suitcase. When I get there I hang the suit up right away, and in a few hours any wrinkles are gone.

I’ll ask him to respond.

Already did.

We’ve got to quit meeting like this…

I thought so, too! :)

Thanks, coureur! He’s going on a trip next month so he can practice with the new suitcase I just ordered for him. I’ll bet the dry cleaners bag will make a big difference with the wrinkle problem, too.

Many wrinkles fall right out if you hang your clothes in the bathroom while you have a nice steamy shower.

My husband has traveled many times on business by carrying a suitbag with his shoes, shirt, and other things in a small nylon bag tucked in the bottom. He uses a large expandable briefcase as a shoulder bag, and the airlines seem to have no problem with his carrying both on.

I’ve been so pleased with the Ricardo carry-on that I ordered as a result of advice given here that I’m back for recommendations on a larger check-through wheeled bag to accommodate a week’s packing. Any suggestions while eBags is today’s Daily Double on Ebates (16% cash back)?
