Case Western Reserve University vs. American University

I’m currently deciding between these two schools and am conflicted as both present pros and cons in relation to my interests and career goals. I hope to major in bio or biochemistry and pursue a pre-med tract, and I know CWRU would present me with great pre-med opportunities (Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, etc.) Case is also ranked #37 on US News (in contrast to Americans ranking of #74) and is well-regarded in the STEM fields. However, after touring both schools I feel more at home at American. I like the campus much more, I like DC more than Cleveland, and it is a lot closer to home. American is not ranked as high and is more known for poly sci/journalism than it is for science. Yet I feel like I’d be happier at American. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

P.S. I’ll be competing for the varsity swim team at whichever school I decide on, Case is DIII whereas American is D1 and both are competitive teams. I’ll have a much better shot at qualifying for NCAAs at Case, yet American will offer more frequent training.

You stated, “I feel more at home at American.” I think you have your answer. Yes, Case may have great science opportunities, but you may make more of the opportunities available at American if you are happier there overall.
(Our family liked the sense of community at American when we visited, too.)
Both are great schools. Congratulations!
