Cashier's Check/Money Order

I was wondering, can you obtain a cashiers check from a bank (which you are not a member of) using a debit card?

You can get a money order at a place like walmart if that’s acceptable.

It’s more likely you will need to use the debit card to use their ATM to withdraw the cash and then buy the cashier’s check with the check. Though I guess each institution has its own rules.

I’m just wondering what happens if the person doesn’t cash in the check? How do I get my money back?

When you buy a cashier’s check, I think the only way it can be reimbursed is if the person to whom you wrote the check gives it back to you. I don’t think banks will reimburse it without the original check. Most banks will require cash for a cashier’s check if you are not a customer of the bank. Debit credit cards will probably not work.

The last time we purchased a house, we needed a cashier’s check for the amount we owed. We closed in the morning on our old house and received a check (not a cashier’s check) for the amount which was less that we owed for our new house (on which we were closing that afternoon 3 hrs. away). I took the check to the bank which issued it, thinking that that was the only way I could get the money immediately. However, that was not our bank, and I needed a check for about $3500 more. Of course, I couldn’t get that much from an ATM, so I had to leave, and go to my bank to get that much cash, go back to the first bank and pay the difference in cash for the cashier’s check. It was a really hassle. I don’t think things have gotten easier since.

Some markets and the post office will also issue money orders for a small charge. It is very difficult to be reimbursed for ANY cashier’s check or money order if you don’t get the original back. Our daughter confronted this issue as the money order she was mailed was lost and fortunately turned up before we had to try to get a refund & reissue.

IF you can get someone to write a check on your behalf and the check is lost, you can put a stop payment on said check for a fee (sometimes around $25 or so) and then reissue the check.

Paypal is another good way of transferring funds.
