My D auditioned for shows, but did not get a call back. Does this mean she is out of the running for even ensemble. This was the case at her high school and I wondered if this is the same at Uarts?

Unfortunately, I believe that is generally the case. The directors of the shows put together the callback lists for specific roles in the shows, including ensemble. Hopefully, your D will not be overly distressed by this. If memory serves me right, this was her first semester and set of auditions at UArts and things can really change from semester to semester. Having gone through the experience now, and with another semester’s training and experience under her belt, her auditions at the end of the spring semester could very well have a very different outcome. I know that my daughter showed much growth in her approach to auditioning for the shows between her first and second semesters because of the additional time spent in acting studio, working with her voice teacher and in her MT performance class.

actually, michael, people can get cast even if they do not have any callbacks, and i know of specific instances where it has happened. even though bat boy (for instance) has callbacks for ensemble roles, it does not mean that someone might not get into it. not all shows have callbacks for every single role. it really varies from director to director and show to show. some directors cast their ensembles from people they had callbacks for, some cast their ensemble with their second choices for their leads from their callbacks, and some cast simply from auditions.

but yeah, you are very right, michael, how one semester can have a completely different outcome. that is the case with many people. and it is very rare that a significant amount of freshmen get cast, even if they do have some callbacks. i have found from experience that most people get cast for the first time some point during their sophomore year.

so ya never know!

Thanks for the clarification!
