I’m still trying to figure out how to process this and what it means, but it hopefully means that change is coming!

"Cuban leader Fidel Castro told compatriots early today that he would not accept another term as president, throwing open the Communist-ruled island’s leadership for the first time in nearly 50 years.

Castro, 81, and ailing with an undisclosed intestinal disorder, announced in a statement carried on the state-run Granma International newspaper website early today that he was stepping down as head of state."

My father is Cuban, and one of my deepest desires is to go back to Cuba with him, and hopefully my Grandmother, so that I can see where my family actually comes from. Right now, it isn’t safe for me to do so, but maybe that will be different soon.

Yes, the consensus of the talking heads on TV this morning is that it probably won’t make an im immediate difference, but hopefully it means changes for the better in the years ahead. As soon as I heard it, I texted my D—her AP Spanish teacher is from Cuba. I know she’d love to go back to visit…maybe she will be able to do so safely in the future…

It’s inevitable that Cuba will need to change dramatically to survive. Maybe this will speed things along but there are bound to be some power struggles ahead for that country in who its leadership will be (maybe someone other than Fidel’s brother), what it’ll be (maybe something other than communist), and how the leadership and populace will adjust.

I was pleased this morning when my 15 year old son reacted in an intelligent, educated manner to the news. Just when you wonder if they ever listen, they surprise you with some real insight. It definitely will be interesting to see how this plays out.

The situation in Cuba has been a sad case for many years–I feel so sorry for the Cuban immigrants that have had to leave behind family members in a country that has been ruled as a dictatorship for all of these years. Unfortunately, it sounds like not much will change, even with Castro stepping down. I guess many in our world are just watching and waiting to see just what might happen.

Things won’t change in Cuba until all of Castro’s family is dead and can no longer harm the Cuban people. I am still hoping the folks in Miama stage an invasion and take the country back for the people.
