Cat Lovers Thread - 2024 and beyond

Sorry, couldn’t resist when it showed up in my Facebook feed today.

Our cat enjoyed a self grooming arch like this:

Thanks - I’ve just noticed that kind of thing recently, even though we’ve had cats for 20 years.

I know this is somewhat ‘trite’, but our urchins loved empty boxes - especially the empty checkout boxes from Costco, that had “openings” when turned upside down. Their favorite small toys were the inexpensive small catnip mice. We would buy in bulk, and then of course find them all over the house under furniture.

I totally agree on the empty boxes - I have saved the box our new bike rack came in and a 30 inch suitcase came in, bc our other cats have loved boxes.

Yep, no matter what you spend on toys, this always wins.

Oh, also lightweight ping pong type balls. She would chase them around the house then I’d have to track them down behind doors, under beds, etc. Or she wait behind something until we rolled them past her hiding spot and she’d race after.

In a pinch, sometimes a bag will do

When we got our kitten back in 2020, my husband was worried she’d have trouble with the stairs (silly, I know). Within a couple of days we were wearing her out by bouncing a little ping pong like ball up the stairs, and she would have the most fun chasing it.

We had to say goodbye to our sweet cat today. He was 12, but we got him as a rescue so only had 4 years with him. He had lymphoma. My H really bonded with him, and he is devastated. RIP, our big Buddy.

That you adopted an 8 year old cat speaks volumes about you and your husband. I am so sorry, it is absolutely horrible when they go. So painful. I will keep you in my thoughts.

Thanks. We adopted him with his sister - their owner had to move in with her D, and she wasn’t able to keep her cats. We had to work hard to get them to trust us. She knew that something was going on with him. She was kind of watching over him as he got toward the end. She is pacing around the house now, and she was laying in a couple of “his” spots earlier. I know that she will have to go through a grieving process.

Oh I’m doubly sorry. We lost a cat to old age/diabetes, and her buddy grieved so hard she refused to eat. Hope your remaining kitty will be ok!

I am so sorry to hear that. Our pets really are family members. Hugs.

My cat is so weird. She likes to take her toys and put them in or near her food, while she’s eating. Twice now in the last couple of days (and she is working on it again tonight) she’s pulled the long handled thing with feathers on the end from where I neatly rolled it up put it, all the way across the house, to where her bowl is in the kitchen.
Our other cat used to “drown” the play mice in her water.
This one just seems to like an audience/some “friends” around while she eats.

OMG, that was what our calico cat used to do (RIP, sweet kitty!).

Advice question:
We are currently fostering a sweet cat short term, while the owner seeks a long-term parent. She’s about 2 years old. She was found on the streets (by someone else), vet-checked, given shots, quarantined, etc. No owner (or chip) found. She’s only been with us 2 days, sequestered to 1 room with food, water, and a soft hiding box. As expected, she hides nearly non-stop (only came out briefly at night). We visit the room occasionally (and stay there at night).

My concern? She has not appeared to use the litter box - or eat during that time. She’s not sick – just really scared. How long can this last without vet intervention?

Suggestions from all you cat-lovers?

Two days without water would concern me. I’d give it one day and then take her to a vet.

How big is the room? We usually confine our visitor cats to a bathroom. That way, the litterbox and food are within an easy reach.

Poor little kitty. I have no real advice, but maybe you could try to entice her with some wet food, which will at least give her some liquid? Set it as close to her as you can, so she can smell it.
