Our cats drink a lot and I think it is due to the fact that we used cat fountains so the water is continually running and also continually filtered. If you aren’t using one - it might be an idea.

Cat Fountain

We also keep the water in a separate place from where we feed the kitties.

Yup we already use the fountain

Poor kitty. What happens if you don’t give him any insulin?

Eventually it goes up. I’m getting frustrated. Vet says give him 1 unit twice a day. I only have him 1/2 of a unit and this happens. Something isn’t right. I did send the results to my vet

I wanted to share a photo of Wilson, who we adopted at age 5. He is now 12. Last year he had all of his teeth removed. This is the first good picture of him with his mouth open.

Are you drawing insulin with a syringe? Make sure you are using the right amount calculated per vial concentration. IMO, I would buy Alphatrack 2 or 3 and do the measurement of his BG using capillary blood (ear capillary). It is not hard. I am suspicious if the CGM meter gives the right measurements.

One of my cats is approaching this stage. Apparently, as the vet explained, cats can develop some sort of autoimmune condition that leads to tooth loss. No worries, my semi-toothless cat eats just fine. Even dry chow. Hope Wilson is doing OK with his meals!

Yup. They gave me a pen and attachments and I never felt like it worked so then they gave me syringes and we tried that. It’s just frustrating as it dropped to 45 and I gave him food and syrup to get it up as I started to panic. Now it’s at about 100 and normal range. I mean not sure how much less insulin I could do at this point.

this is the monitor he wears

I’d have the vet check his BG using blood; have them do at least a couple of measures to make sure they match the CGM monitor’s readings. Has the vet done that? Is the kitty displaying any signs of hypoglycemia when his readings are so low?

This is very frustrating. Hugs.

Yes they did when he has been to the office and it was very high both times. Right now its fluctuating between low and low normal.

I don’t notice any signs but then again he sleeps all day

Vet called last night. She was concerned about the low numbers and suggested not giving him any insulin for 24 hours to see how he does. If the numbers spike and do not drop at all we are gonna switch the insulin and try that.

It really makes zero sense that a tiny bit such as 1/2 of a unit could cause the levels to drop that dramatically.

Where do you purchase the Alpha Trak from? I only see the sticks on Amazon

I got mine from Chewy. I think the maker is now selling AlphaTrack 3, the next model.

I’ve been looking around the internet to get more info on the glucometer you are using, and there are reports that the meter can give false low glucose readings in certain conditions. There are multiple Reddit posts about cat BG testing and some research articles, but the articles I’ve seen are somewhat outdated.

I think your vet has a good plan.

I’d also get his blood checked with a capillary blood glucose meter when the CGM device is showing those super low readings to make sure these are not false lows. Because apparently these CGMs can be accurate at the high glucose concentrations but not so accurate at the low end.

Our vet (and confirmed by my niece who is also a vet) says we don’t need to constantly check our cat’s glucose. I periodically run BG curves to make sure his insulin is working, keep an eye on him, but don’t measure his BG daily. As long as the curve looks like a curve within 300-100 range, he is getting the right dose. And he gets to go to the vet 2-3 times a year to check his bloodwork and get urine tests.

Has anyone used the elevated bowls for their cats? These are supposed to reduce vomiting.

All Bunsen cats eat off elevated ceramic bowls! I got them from Chewy. This is the ones I have:

They are also wide and shallow to reduce whiskers fatigue (who would have thought it is a thing )! This was the main reason I got these bowls. My cats still barf during the shedding season, but they definitely barf less. Hmmm…. An added benefit!

Mine seem to be trading off scarfing and barfing their food right now so I thought I would try new bowls. Thank you for the link.

Scarfing and barfing sounds familiar! I smear their Fancy Feast around the bowl a bit. That probably also helps to slow down the scarfing!

OMG!!! That’s perfect. Every day someone barfs - and always on the carpet. Our poor 18 year old carpet is just hideous
