pg. 734 # 6

If there is no waste, how many square yards of carpeting is needed to cover a rectangular floor that is 12 ft by 18ft? (1 yd=3ft)
Answer is C) 24

this question sounds soo easy but i cant get it…don’t you have to find the area (216) and divide it by 3…and u get 72…or i’m probably misinterpreting the question.

you need to remember that a square yard isn’t 3 square feet, it’s 9 sqft (3x3 square)

Divide 216 by 9 and you do get 24.

(fixed!)

oo ok…got it ^ u mean 216 divided by 9

Exactly. Explain in another way :
First, if you want to devide, you must convert yard to feet or vice versa
By example : If a rat weights 200 g, and a elephant weights 5 tons, that’s mean the rat is 40 times heavier than the elephant???
It’s a very easy-trick question, but it could show you how important the measurement unit is

So first, I convert feet to yard : “12 ft by 18ft” means “4 yards by 6 yards” ( 1 yard = 3 feet )
So the area is 4x6 = 24 yards
