CC Dissed on Sound Money

^^^Sex fair, with ice cream? I’ll bet that sells out quickly!

I don’t have anything to add, but since I live in Georgia, could I please be called "Georgie Porgie? I’ve never had puddin pie, but if any of you cooks could pass on the recipe, I’d 'preciate it. :)

We just have too much fun here guys…It cracked me up. Don’t we have more important chores to do? Well, the author does have the freedom of speech, you know…

Yes, freedom of speech… him and the Westboro Babtist Church

Oh you all are just silly billies.

I’m going to have to dig deep on this one. Back to my childhood. (I did have brothers.)

–Stinky Inky

I have definitely learned to stay away from certain CC sub-fora, certain threads, and certain posters. But the valuable threads and helpful posters have been wonderful.

CC is a mixed bag, but when it’s on, it’s on.

Special shout-out to mom2collegekids – thank you again and again!

*I help him find the only school in the region with an alcohol-based degree and THIS is what I get?! *

LOL–PuppyWuppy you just made my day.

Well, PuppyWuppy was somewhat vindicated on this week’s Marketplace Money show:

Yay for our cc posters!!

intparent-
Can you post the link to that quote?

** never mind-- I found it http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2011/03/04/mm-letters-not-everyone-likes-chris-you-your-kids-and-college/</a></p>

I just typed it from listening to the podcast. It wasn’t my letter (mine scolded them a bit more for giving bad advice when they usually do such a good job, and letting a slacker in the college search process be passed of as an expert just because he wrote a book about it).

College Confidential is comparable to Wikipedia. It suffers from the same benefits and flaws of user-created content. I would not discount it, however. The multiple opinions at CC expose the reader to the fact that there is debate and no “sure-fire” way to go through the college selection process. Some posts are jewels, but others are written poorly or represent rather extreme opinions.

As a college student from an immigrant family, I did some of the college search things parents normally do in addition to the one students normally focus on. Obviously, you should seek opinions from various sources, including expert-written books, HS college counseling offices, college reps, internet, CC we site, and friends/family.

Each of the non-CC sources has their advantages, but I wouldn’t discount checking the web site. Experts often have interesting opinions, but some experts are biased. Since they have to write college search books for the general audience, books will give you good general principles but won’t answer questions about individual colleges. USNWR is a rough guideline, but I found the rankings to not be particularly useful. College reps & web sites are great for finding our about specific programs, scholarships, and FA but they are also advertising pitches for that college. HS college counseling services vary in quality. At my HS, college counseling did a good job of explaining how to get into college, but they weren’t all that good at explaining how to pay for college and weren’t very cost-conscious (they told me I was a fool to reject Northwestern and Cornell on the basis of cost).

i.*

Easy for them to say!

And therein lies the pitfall of the Advice Industry. No one knows what it’s like to walk in your shoes, except you.

PuppyWuppy, you’re in the news again as the book circuit continues…
[Dad turns college admissions nightmare into comedy - CNN.com](http://www.cnn.com/2011/LIVING/03/16/crazy.u.dad.ferguson/index.html?hpt=Sbin)

My cousin gave me the best advice ever: As a parent, you never really get good at the college application thing, because each child approaches it completely differently. You understand the overall process better with each child, but since the process is mostly in their hands, they’re in control of it, and you just have to go along for the ride.

Having had 2 go through the process, I think she’s right. Each kid approached it completely differently, and I had to back off and let them make their own mistakes and their own decisions (even when it made me crazy). Ultimately, they have to live with the decisions they make.

So apparently my son was a dual major. . .beer AND girls. (Thankfully, he finally picked something more employable!)

I’m a little ticked off right now. Despite using the search function, I can’t seem to locate this guy “RodtheBod69” that Ferguson talks about (hey, I’m single!)

Yeah, a lot of us would be interested in RodtheBod69. Single or not! :D

Unless the 69 is his age…

That did not occur to me. :)
