This is asked on behalf of a CA friend. (I’m not even an American, and I got my BS already.) Have posted on College Admissions board but repost here for more opinions.

Her family was of low income, and after her parents’ seperation in 2004 her family has practically no income at all-- for religious reasons her parents do not want to stage a divorce.

For a long time she has been doing clinical trials to earn money for textbooks, and now her Pell Grant stopped (because she attended for more than 70 units in her CCCs), she has few monetary sources.

This time, there is a clinical trial that would pay $6,000 to her if she got in, and to finish with the trial she has to be hospitalized for more than a month (Feb 12- Mar 16). She applied and would have the blood test to see if she’s eligible latter this month, but here’s the problem:

If she got into this trial program, she has to drop with all her CCC classes this semesters (ie an empty semester), and she has to decide it by Jan 27 to prevent W’s to be on her transcript.

But, is having an empty semester like that affect her transfer to UCLA and UCI in 2007? Note the remaining 3 semesters would be enough for her to take her prerequsitive courses for transferring into her major (Chinese).
