The third Student Learning Outcome for the university foundational requirements is entitled Engaging Society & Global Responsibility. It contains courses in history, social sciences, and three semester in a foreign language course or the equivalent. Another course is CCE 073, Cross-Cultural Engagement, a zero credit experience required for all bachelor’s degree students. This course can be completed via a study abroad program. Since I am an equine major, I went on a search for an equine study abroad opportunity. I came across a program being offered for 2020 giving six credits in courses my university also has. The program cost is steep at $5,500.
Neither my family nor myself can afford the cost, so I sought out assistance from the university. They explained to me that financial aid can only be applied to university approved programs. Such programs include Paris with the art department and Spain with the Spanish department. None of the programs have equine courses. They also require students to take a semester off from the university. The equine major has a natural progression, making it difficult to miss any semesters. I also reached out to the Kentucky Office for Vocational Rehabilitation, and they cannot offer any financial aid either. I am wondering then how to afford such a program if at all possible.
