I am debating whether I should get a Lenovo Thinkpad or an Apple Macbook Pro. I received the full thinkpad grant and my parents are willing to pay the difference for a better laptop. I’ve always wanted a macbook, but I will be a biomedical engineering major. Will it be more appropriate for me to go PC than Mac if I will be doing BME? I’ve heard it is better to go PC if you plan on being a engineering/comp sci major.

Anyone out there with personal experience as an engineering/comp sci major using a mac? Does it really matter which one I get?

I’m wondering the same thing; however, in my case, I’m a bio major. Do you know who much the difference is? I haven’t looked into it.

I will be majoring in Comp Sci, and I will be ordering a Mac. I much prefer Apple’s OS X to Windows, even though the hardware in the Thinkpads is more powerful and costs less.

Plus, you can get Windows installed on your Mac free through CCI, so if there is something for your major that can only be done in Windows, you can still do that. There is no way (outside of hacking) to install OS X on a Thinkpad.

If you want a Macbook then get a Macbook. You can dual boot with Windows, and you shouldn’t face any problems with any software they might ask you to install. Many comp sci professors use Macbooks and OSX is POSIX-compliant (since its based on Unix) and has a regular terminal, like Linux.

The difference between the cheapest Lenovo and the cheapest Macbook is about $350.

^Thanks! I’m going with a Mac =)

Hi guys, I decided to get the Mac and it only cost me 280$ more! (I have the full grant)

Thanks guys for your feedback! I will be ordering the Mac too!! I too received the full grant, but I thought it was just $300 more to get the Mac?

HOw do we cover the difference in cost for a Mac if we are using a grant, because I was told to select cash as payment option and list my info in the comments. Do we need to list a credit card as well and hope they don’t charge full price to it?

I selected cash to be on the safe side. But you can select whatever you wish. I’ll be paying cash when I pick up my laptop during orientation. And no I did not need to provide any credit card information…
