@thumper1: I don’t know. Is there a way to call the CDC and ask??
IMO, better safe than sorry.

Good news - the planned Thanksgiving salad is spinach based. Bad news…keeping the troops fed from Weds. morning up until the actual feeding frenzy on Thursday included romaine. Just picked up 2 six packs or the organic stuff at Costco…oh well…here’s to happy chickens.
@droppedit - are you sure that six pack will be bactericidal enough?
I lucked out by waiting till tomorrow to buy my lettuce. Not romaine, it is.
Ugh…just ate a romaine salad yesterday. But so far my state isn’t one affected yet. I wonder how long it takes for symptoms to appear.
“They knew about the recall yet their produce section still had a wall of Romaine lettuce variants, mixes, etc.”
The grocery chain’s attorneys would be popping some blood vessels if they knew.
@surfcity usually the local health departments send out the alert. In our state, they have auto email and auto call ability to push the alerts out, and those lists include all restaurants and grocery stores.
Hownon earth does this happen? Is romaine grown in a small area? Luckily my Thanksgiving salad is spinach.
@BunsenBurner — swish and swallow.
Perhaps it is how they fertilize. Who knows. The epidemiologists are pretty good at tracking down the sources.
@conmama , the article in the OP states symptoms usually start 3 to 4 days after ingestion.
@gouf78 - lol. Prolly needs a stronger disinfectant. Like a glass of merlot.
So back to my question. We buy our greens only from a local CSA farm. They sell only what they grow. Should I be worried about romaine.
My guess is no - it is the growing conditions not romaine itself that is the issue - but I’d ask your CSA. I would assume they don’t want risk misleading people.
I told the produce guy at the grocery store about this when I shopped this afternoon about an hour after it hit the news and he clearly hadn’t heard anything yet. All of the “baby” greens mixes I checked had romaine in them.
@missbwith2boys thank you!
I figured chains like Applebee’s etc have an established way to monitor/communicate on this. The restaurant was a little ethnic place and I doubt they have a lawyer or formal consultant on retainer for this type of thing
@BunsenBurner – I’m finishing off the night with a glass of Four Roses. That should be enough … hick!
I read the reason we’re being warned off all romaine is they have no idea yet where this problem originated. It may very well turn out that some/many recent purchases are just fine.
I would think csa lettuce is fine. The problem is often the big growers and distributors with a long reach. But don;t take my word for it. You could call your local health dept.
@CottonTales …great! I guess we’ll see over Thanksgiving of course.
Yep…CSA is fine. The likely issue is at a grower or distribution point. One of the big ones.
Didn’t this happen a while ago…also romaine and they isolated it to romaine grown in the Yuma area?
