My D will be studying abroad in Denmark in the fall. Any advice on where to start in getting her a cell phone? She currently uses an iPhone 6 from Sprint, so it would be nice to be able to continue to use an iPhone, but I’m open to other suggestions. (I also have an old iPhone 5 from Sprint that isn’t being used).
A phone shop?
When my son went to Denmark (spring, 2013), he had just gotten an iphone5. During the first week of orientation, the school had venders for SIM cards. Is your daughter doing DIS? They sent information several weeks before he left which explained all of the options.
Yes, she’s doing DIS…I’m starting to read up on everything, but thought I’d put it out here for anyone’s personal experience or advice.
Call Sprint and get the iphone 6 unlocked for international use. Sprint will authorize the unlock to Apple and you will need to backup and restore your iphone. Her school should have carrier recommendations - “3” and Telenor have excellent networks and nearby country native roaming - but not everywhere.
Make sure she turns off data before arriving or she might be hit with a huge bill from Sprint (or buy a Sprint international data pack) until she gets a new nanosim from her carrier. Make sure to enable wifi calling on her phone and your sprint account.
If she is at University she will likely be on wifi most of the time go a limited data plan should be OK. I would get a skype account for calling home too, or you could use imessage
Thank you @TooOld4School – I’ll give Sprint a call. I thought I would have to get another phone, it would be great to be able to use her current phone.
You should both download Viber and create an account - you can text with wifi using viber from anywhere no charge.
Thanks @MaterMia!
