Hey Parents,
As stated in the title my question regards cellulitis. I have a bump on my face almost in front of my ear. It’s been there two weeks. It is red at times, but not all the time. Painful when pressed on. My mom called the doctor’s office today, and they schedule me an appointment for Friday. I just got a phone call from my mom who said the doctor’s nurse called, and said the doctor wants me to go to urgent care instead. Anyone ever have cellulitis? I can’t go until my mom’s professor approves her to go home early from class. Earliest he will let is 7pm, and my sister gets out of her class around 8pm. My dad is at work. I guess the triage nurse took the first phone call, and she is the one who said it could be cellulitis. She actually told my mom first just to take me to the e.r. From what I’ve read on-line its just a deep infection that could turn in MRSA. Does anyone know what kind of test they preform? I don’t do well with IV’s or getting my blood drawn. Not looking forward to this visit. If it where up to me I would wait until Friday, but now my mom is worried. I had a similar bump on my chin that was very swollen for a week. I did a bad thing I guess when I popped it. Although pus did come out. I never tried to pop the one by my ear though. Any suggestions on how to calm my fear? I’ve come a long way with needles. I can now get shots without crying! :] I still have a long way to go.

As long as you fell well, you’ll be all right if you wait a few hours. They may put you on antibiotics. Good luck!

Thanks I feel well. No fever to my knowledge. I plan on checking before my shower because last time I had a fever of 103.7 and I didn’t know it. I’m always cold so I never think to check for a fever. I’m hoping they say all I need is oral antibiotics, and a re-check in two weeks with my doctor.

It could be just an infected pimple. You could put a hot pack on it to draw out the head. Have you used alcohol or any topical ointment to clean the sight?

I had cellulitis this summer. I had lost some skin on the area and it left a depression. It would not heal no matter what I used on it. I had it for almost a month and finally went to the doctors. I had mine in a place that gets pressure put on it and it was painful. I had to take both an oral antibiotic and topical antibiotic. I took one antibiotic and had to change mid week because it was the wrong type. They took a swab of the sight and sent it off to be tested. Once the lab came back they knew to change my antibiotic.

I’ve put heat on it off and on. I’ve also put ice on it. It hasn’t came to a head in the past two weeks. It’s in an area I can’t see very well so my mom has been looking at it. As I stated before all I know is that it’s a little red, swollen, hard, and hurts when pressed. I did have similar thing on my chin, and it hasn’t healed up from when I pinched it. It’s no longer bleeding, but I know where it was. It almost looks like a little hole, but its not. I think when my mom told them that I had a similar thing on my chin, and that is why that want me to go tonight instead of waiting for Friday. I’m hoping it’s just a boil, but at least now I have some insight on what they do to test it. The internet is full of information so you never know what is true.

Here is a news piece on how the heat wave is increasing the number of carbuncles. If you want to just read the article, skip the accompanying video - it’s a little gross.

It took less than 10 minutes at urgent care. The doctor thinks its a nodule, which is a type of acne. From what I’ve read on-line it’s one of the most painful types, and antibiotics are used to treat it. She told me to watch it for another 2 weeks, and if it isn’t gone I need to see a dermatologist. Although for my insurance I need a referral which I wasn’t given. So I might end up calling the doctor who is covering for my doctor so I can have one in hand. Thank you for the help though. My mom is thinking she will just call for an appointment with a dermatologist once we have a referral so that in case the antibiotic doesn’t work I will still have enough time to go back before school, which is in three weeks.
