Census worker killed in Kentucky

This happened September 12th. Apparently he had the word FED scrawled across his chest. He was HUNG.

Better believe that story got our attention. My wife worked as a temporary employee of the Census. She used a handheld gps to verify addresses and did not have to knock on doors and talk to people. Hourly rate was decent. She got called for the next round that involved knocking on doors and actually surveying residents. Pay was for some strange reason significantly lower. She declined.

Anyone have a link to a reputable news source regarding this incident? Just would like to see more detail… haven’t noticed anything on the major news outlets, and it seems like it would have been picked up (but maybe I missed it).

I found several reports on it, but I am still hoping it is not true somehow. Here is one story. It says they are also investigating suicide but it seems strange that he would write “Fed” across his own chest, right?

Its real. Happened 10 days ago with only local coverage.

This just makes my blood boil. What a senseless, cruel thing to do! One of my relatives did part time work for the census, so this really hits home on a personal level.

It’s getting a lot of coverage now - it’s the top US story on Google News, with links to 953 articles.

If this happened Sept. 12, and we’re only hearing about it now, my best guess is that the authorities thought there was a strong possibility it was a suicide. Perhaps they no longer think so, and that’s why it’s getting wider play now.

This is terrible! Why would anyone do this unless they were really paranoid?

[Just an aside: people are hanged, not hung when using the past participle of the verb “to hang.”]

Here’s an updated article:

[Feds Probe US Census Worker Hanging In Kentucky - WISN 12: Politics News Story - WISN Milwaukee](Milwaukee News, Weather and Sports - Wisconsin News - WISN Channel 12)

The FBI is involved and has suspended door to door census visits in the county, which is a pretty good sign they do not consider this a suicide…

Thanks to the talk shows saying that the Census is this grand conspiracy to take away rights and track people.

Its seems its okay to track email, etc cause people don’t have anything to hide, but ask some questions to make sure everyone get what they need and its a fascist conspiracy.

If a census had happened under Bush, you think the pundets would be saying what they are?

If this is indeed a murder, its onthe heads of some radio “hosts”

In the last article posted above, there was a suggestion that there is drug trafficking in the area–perhaps some drug people thought he was snooping on them. In a way, I kind of hope that is the explanation.

Are you freaking kidding me?

Holy cow. Don’t these people know that the Census is MANDATED by the US Constitution??

Fine. Let’s not count them…then they’ll have less representation in Congress. Win/win.

Except, as aibarr says, it’s in the Constitution. Maybe some civics lessons will help.

You wouldn’t know that it is mandated by the Constitution from the comments by the House Rep from my district (Michele Bachmann): “The mother lode of all data information will be from the Census. … Unfortunately, the Census data has become very intricate, very personal, a lot of the questions that are asked. I know for my family, the only question we will be answering is how many people are in our home. We won’t be answering any information beyond that, because the Constitution doesn’t require any information beyond that.”

This is a violation of federal law punishable by a fine of up to $5,000! It isn’t just “radio hosts” that are fanning these flames, it is our own members of Congress.

I used to live in a place like this. There are certain people in the backwoods/sparsely populated areas who just don’t want to be found or counted–for a reason. Drugs is the most likely explanation.
Any stranger at the door is going to be a problem. Anything related to the government might mean arrest.

Yeah, but my rep is from Minnesota! If this kind of rhetoric plays in suburbs of the Twin Cities and she can get re-elected (as she did last fall), we are in pretty deep trouble as a country… It isn’t just backwoods places where this attitude is taking hold.

Wasn’t she talking about the American Community Survey, which is NOT the census?
