Central Texas flooding Memorial Day weekend

Fans are still stuck at the Toyota Center after last night’s Rockets game. And parts of the Galleria are flooded.

Thirty people is now the current number of missing people in Hays County in central Texas.

Goodness! How terrible.

We had winds (either straight line or tornado) that took the roof off the church where we have several Girl Scout activities SW of Austin Saturday night. We were eating in a restaurant about a mile away. We knew the weather was getting bad and I asked the manager to tune one of the 8 TV’s in the room to the weather radar channel. The one I specifically asked them to change was playing an info-commercial at the time and he REFUSED stating that the owner only allows sports on the TV’s. I was livid. We got our food to go.

Also lived in Austin in 1981 near Shoal Creek but well north of downtown. Water came across street but not into house. Original Whole Foods was badly flooded. New cars from dealers downtown floated to Lake Austin. When my stepson moved to Austin I told him to stay away from creeks–warned of May flooding. He took that advice.

@barrons - how true; if you’ve been in Austin any length of time, you know what areas tend to flood and what to stay away from! I remember the Whole Foods flooding (of course, this was years before the majority of the country knew what Whole Foods was) and the music store (can’t remember the name of the music store).

@greenwitch - glad to hear your friends are OK. When I sent a message to my friend in Driftwood on Facebook and didn’t hear back from her, I was hesitant to keep following up because I figured she’s getting all kinds of phone calls, questions, etc. from everyone wanting to make sure she’s OK. Thankfully she did text me back after I texted her. Another one of my friends is actually in Italy right now so she may not know what the state of her home is, although she lives Cedar Park now, and I don’t know how they’ve fared. I haven’t been to this house before, so I don’t know if it’s up high or not. So I do appreciate when some of the people I know have put status updates on their Facebook walls. I don’t feel like I have to pester them at such a difficult time.

Every time I hear the story about the two families who have gone missing, I get goose bumps. In the one family, the wife called her sister and said their rental cabin (they were on vacation) roof had just collapsed, and the house was now starting to float down the river. She told her sister to call their mom and day, and pray, and said I love you, then hung up. Her husband was found 12 miles down the river alive, but injured, but his wife and two young children have not been found.

@teriwtt - my San Marcos friends were joking about finding rattlesnakes in their yard last week so it makes you wonder where those snakes went.

So sad about the missing people. I was woken up by storms for the last two nights but they weren’t so frightening that I felt in true danger. I could probably imagine that if I tried… but no, I don’t want to think of that!

I have a friend in Houston and she posted pics of the Galleria. I cannot believe that mall is flooded!

^^^ and their website said they were going to open at noon today. I wonder if they did, and if they did, where did everyone park?

Had another high school friend post an update tonight, and she is safe, but has been without power since 9:30 last night - I think she’s in the Oak Forest area of Houston.

@greenwitch - I absolutely could not sleep in my house at night if I was wondering where those rattlesnakes went. Can you imagine the mosquito problem they’re going to have in a couple of weeks (as if mosquitoes aren’t already bothersome enough there)?

D has been trying to figure out how to best help out in Wimberely and has volunteered to laundry for flood victims after school for the next few days, the Boy Scout were collecting can goods and cleaning supplies at their meeting tonight.

A friend who lives in Austin posted a picture on FB a few days ago that showed a road sign reading: “Turn Around Don’t Drown”! The road was flooded over a dip in such a way that it looked like it was maybe 8 inches or so. Not so: it was actually several feet deep. If you didn’t know the road…

So sorry to here the bad news. Its not fun to be soaked in the water

I am currently deep in central Texas in the Texas Hill Country. Where I am, there is no hint of any problem. I drove past Wimberly and some of the other deeply affected areas, and none of this was apparent from the interstate. I am due to head home tomorrow and hope the weather holds.

Where we have our lake house, the really severe drought has eased, the lake has filled, and now flooding is starting to occur, so they are letting water out of the dam, and things could get dicey for some communities downstream.

Too much of a good thing that was so prayed for. :frowning:

That’s horrible, whenhen. I read a facebook post from a newspaper clipping that said (I am abbreviating the names) :

[quote]
S.A., as well as her husband, J. and their daughter, were being rescued by a rescue boat, which subsequently capsized. S.A. and her husband were swept away; their daughter was picked up by another boat, upstream. S., whose body has been found, perished in the flood waters. S’s husband has not yet been recovered.

Utterly frightening graphics that show how much water has fallen in Texas - over just 2 days!

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2015/05/27/the-insane-amount-of-rain-thats-fallen-in-texas-visualized/

I drove through central Texas today back to Dallas, and I white knuckled it for more than 3 hours. Torrential rain, the kind which almost totally obliterates your ability to see ahead of you, all while driving next to massive 18 wheelers with full loads. It was terrifying.

Now, looking at the radar, I see a huge system of severe weather with heavy rain approaching my area (DFW) from the west. A very large area of Texas will be impacted by this system.

Oh my! Stay safe!

Thank you for the consolations. The service was beautiful.

Yikes, I have to drive through OK and Kansas tomorrow to get to my new job in CO. Looks like I’m going to have to make this a two day trip.

I just did an analysis to see how quickly the droughts in most of Oklahoma disappeared. Wow has this month been severe.

Whenhen, so sorry. Please be safe!
