Why not just tell people that this Lynch family had nothing to do with lynching. Maybe all families with the name Lynch should be required to change their surnames. Maybe Loretta Lynch’s name was offensive.
Just to be clear–"Board Vice Chair Pam Shields said part of the reason she’s “very comfortable” with changing the school names is that the district no longer owns land donated by the Lynch family. "
I remember some people in NY wanting to change the name of Fishkill, not realizing that it is from Dutch and means “abundant fish” or something like that.
But this is the best case - people voted for a former beloved mayor to have his name on a new government building, but the PC police, in this case the Prurient Police, stopped it.
Article says that the district no longer owns any of the land donated by the Lynch family, and that there are three schools int he district with “Lynch” in the name, as well as one other school that used to but was renamed previously (presumably for other reasons).
Seems like they were tired of having to explain it, or worried about incorrect first impressions being made before they could explain it to someone who sees it for the first time. In the article, there did not seem to be mention of any controversy specifically with changing these schools’ names.
The impression from the article is that the school district administration is ambivalent about the name, but is now finding it to be enough of an unwanted distraction or liability that they do not want to deal with any more.
The PC-police types have been unhinged for a while, but most people pay little attention to them even when they noisily shotgun accusations of racism everywhere whenever they do not like something. But this does not look like that kind of situation.
On the other hand, people all over the political spectrum seem to be getting more unhinged these days, and they shotgun their unhinged stuff everywhere, often before determining if there is even a tiny bit of truth to it.
My son was making the comment that we keep changing names of things, but the reality is, we could just use sounds and eventually people would be offended by the sound. A rose by any other name and all, concepts seem to offend people and banning words will just cause people to come up with new names that will then offend people after awhile.
Seems to me the few who are outraged about this don’t even live in that district or have anything to do with it at all and are in no way affected by the name change. Snowflakes.
Snap Judgement Podcast 805 has an interview with kids surnamed Hitler and how it affected their lives and how their parents decided to keep the family name rather than change it. Don’t think they were related to “the” Hitler at all but they battled the name for better or worse through school. Interesting.
So, let’s limit all discussion and outrage over ANY issue to only those affected directly or living in the affected area. If you don’t live in the South…you have no say over which flag gets flown…right?
