So I started Chabot community college this summer and I plan to major in Communication Studies. I already chose my fall classes (mostly general education) and I would love to talk to a UCLA person about what classes I should take, because the counselors here don’t really help you. But who do I talk to? What are my chances getting in? Chabot College is not part of any Transfer programs that UCLA has.

You should definitely check out assist.org if you have not done so. It’s a super helpful website that will tell you the transferable courses and prerequisites for your desired major.

As far as chances of getting in, you can check out the ‘Profile of Admitted Transfer Students, UCLA’ that are released by UCLA Undergraduate Admissions. It shows you the average admitted GPA for your major, so you can get an idea of what to aim for.

Representatives from almost all 4 year universities visit chabot somewhere in the fall semester so make sure to visit the cafeteria when they do and ask them questions. I’m sure a UCLA rep will be there. Also, there are flyers near the counselors office that has workshop dates for transfer stuff. It looks like this (this is for fall 13):
http://www.chabotcollege.edu/Counseling/TECS/docs/Fall%2013%20Workshop%20Schedule.pdf
I attended a few workshops myself and they were a bit helpful. As OCaptnMyCaptn said, assist.org will probably be your most important tool for transffering.

My daughter got into UCLA’s Comm Studies this fall 2014. She had all the requisites completed but two that aren’t offered in many places: comm 10 and a linguistics class. Her GPA was high, though. The median is 3.9.

Her CC did not have a particularly high UCLA transfer rate - about 20, I believe. I think Chabot is way higher. I wouldn’t worry about that, though. Just do the requisites at assist.org. If a class isn’t articulated don’t worry. Chabot will have them all but maybe the two I mentioned. Get a high GPA! That’s crucial. Also complete IGETC. No partial.

My daughter was not TAP, but it’s irrelevant as Comm Studies is excluded from TAP, so don’t worry about that.

Definitely try and do some ECs related to marketing/PR/social media. Ask a company to do their twitter for them and they can make it an internship for a few months. Join the PRSSA, which is the student part of the national Public Relations association. I forget the actual name - but that’s the acronym. Show UCLA you are committed to this career.

The only thing to keep in mind is they changed the requirements starting for fall 2015. There is a questionnaire supplement, plus you need to submit a project, which is definitely a tough add. It’s on the UCLA Comm StudIes home page:
